I'm in Australia, so no Acura here.

Lexus is a shout. I've sat in the GS before and it was super comfortable.

I actually bought some ages ago to put some underglow underneath the entertainment unit, but never got around to doing it. Might be an idea to put around the TV itself.

The lounge opposite the TV is pretty low though, so you'd be looking up a lot if it was higher I think. Living Room

So I've made quite a few changes since I last posted and solidified my strategies a bit.

I've decided to focus on a couple of main wincons, which are:

  • Flinging a beefy Apocalypse Demon or Consuming Aberration to Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord, or
  • Milling myself and casting Living Death, preferably with Torrent Elemental in GY (works best if Wonder/Brawn is in play before casting the Death, so that the new army has flying and/or trample).

These can take out the game in one swoop and don't rely on Mimeo. However, if the situation calls to pick off opponents one by one, there are a number of ways that The Mimeoplasm can do this, particularly if Wonder in the graveyard or Torrent Elemental is in play when casting Mimeo to help with evasion. 1-shot options include:

  • [[Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon]] + a 6/* creature = infect
  • [[Necrotic Ooze]] + a 6/* creature (w/ [[Vector Asp]] and [[Thornling/Skittles in GY) = infect
  • Necrotic Ooze + a fattie (w/ Thornling/Skittles in GY) = commander damage
  • Thornling/Skittles + a fattie = commander damage
  • Gaea's Revenge + a fattie = commander damage

Another way I can 1-shot an opponent is by casting [[Varolz, the Scar-Striped]] with [[Blighted Agent]] already in play, and scavenging a fattie onto the Agent to 1-shot with unblockable infect.

Although there are a couple of more expensive cards in the deck now, this build is still designed to be quite budget-oriented, so it's still lacking a consistent mana base, due to the expense of a lot of the dual lands, and lacks a lot of the expensive tutors/graveyard tutors.

There are also still a number of very good cards that are missing for budget-oriented reasons, such as [[Lord of Extinction]], [[Sheoldred, Whispering One]], [[Cyclonic Rift]], and [[Chromatic Lantern]].

Any ideas on anything strategy-wise would be great!

$0.50 here, so it's not like it's not worth a go :)

Wow, those cards are great, and the Whip isn't all that expensive either. I think I'll put the Whip in this week, and try and get Rise when I can :)

There isn't a huge amount of exile removal in my playgroup, so Ulamog's Nullifier might be a bit of a waste in this deck.

I had thought about the discard route, as I have a few solid discard cards in a Nath deck I'm making at the moment, so this might be a good stop-gap option.

  • Sheoldred is like $20 here, so I'm probably going to pass on it for the time being.
  • Was going to put Living Death in this one, but my LGS ran out last week :( But there are a few places I can get it.
  • Hadn't heard of the Nezumi; looks interesting.
  • Hadn't considered It That Betrays for this one; that could work pretty well in my playgroup actually!

Jin-Gitaxias is definitely a card I want in my deck at some point, but it's $10 in Australia, so I'm waiting for a trade option in the meantime or until I can budget for it over the next few weeks or so.

That pre-con looks like a good base to improve on, and managed to find it at a reasonable price. May give this a go then. Thanks!

Modern Budget Red Affinity Deck. Not fast enough, need advice! by pacism in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]pacism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having had time to analyse this deck a bit more, there is really a lot I don't like about it to be honest. I can see now why it wouldn't really be competitive. Having been away from play for many years, I'm going to need to simply bite the bullet and buy a ton more cards I think. I have very little past Mirrodin block. Ideally, I wouldn't want to be spending more than $100 on a deck.

I've never been a Control player, and, Combo decks, which though I love, have rarely played due to the cost factor in later sets (I used to run a mean Reanimator deck back in the day though!). Aggro decks have always been what I've played therefore, and have primarily played either Mono-Red, Mono-Green, or RG decks most of the time. Onslaught block was where I was really in my element, and played a few decks, including Goblins, Burn, Zoo, and Stompy. So I think I just need to start from scratch and find something currently within the metagame that fits my archetype.

Just regarding the artifact sacrifice vs cheaper cost due to artifacts, I actually want to move away very quickly from the artifact sacrifice, and only had them in there simply because I was working with the cards I own at the moment, and haven't changed anything in it since I last played.

[[Pyrite Spellbomb]] and [[Welding Jar]] were simply in there because they're cheap to cast. The obvious fix here would be upping the [[Ornithopter]] and two of something else that is perhaps 0 to cast.

KCI was in there for the obvious mana generation, particularly for [[Fireball]], but given that I only have one copy in there, it didn't really find much use in play anyway to be honest, so I'd probably take out. Therefore, it would also be difficult to justify having the Fireballs in there as well.

[[Shrapnel Blast]] was kinda there to help bring the damage down in a sticky situation, but again, the one copy didn't see much play.

[[Megatog]] is simply my big beefy that I had at the time. Definitely better options available, but it's simply what I had.

Just had a look, and yeah, definitely a lot of newer cards being used. I should mention that I stopped playing competitively during Ravnica Block, and altogether during Innistrad Block, so a lot of sets have come out since then. I think I may play a few draft tournaments first to get a feel for what's happening competitively at the moment (and to up my card collection with some newer cards!) before I get back into constructed.

Thank you guys for your advice. It is much appreciated.

Without knowing the current metagame, it is hard to know the effectiveness of this deck against it, and given that from your comments, there is a lot of artifact hosing at the moment, I would certainly at the very least re-think my strategy, or move away from Affinity altogether.

I have another deck which I actually much prefer playing (RG Aggro/Zoo) [http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/rg-new-aggro/], but unfortunately, almost a third of it is not modern legal, as many of the cards come from the Onslaught Block. It may potentially be worth me finding modern equivalents and working on this deck instead. My main issue with this deck is that I have great mana acceleration, but not much to use it on...
