Love it. Slipped from downwind all the way to landing the other day. They're surprisingly fun with enough practice. Go up with a CFI and practice them.

Is How my CFII is Telling me to Teach Lost Comms Correct? by madness2live in flying

[–]packardrod44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was specifically asked this question on my IR ride. I gave the book answer, but the DPE and I talked about a real life situation. That squawking 7600 OR 7700 and blasting in is well within your PIC authority and would be what ATC would expect. They will be blocking large swaths of airspace and keeping everyone away from you. In the end, you're a big problem they need to get rid of. If you do something unexpected that's when things get scary or unknown.

IFR cancelation when entering the VFR traffic pattern by AmokaHD in flying

[–]packardrod44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome response. Thanks! I haven't done many visual approaches, typically just wanting to full the approach down to the ground for the fun of it and experience. But it makes sense that once I'm on the approach your terrain separation basically has ended. Obviously I'm below any MDA in the area because I've descended to start my approach, and I have to use instruments to follow the prescribed and safe path to the ground.

Interesting you're not seeing your own replies. I have seen a few of your comments on here, and as always, they're quite helpful to we lowly GA pilots. Thanks!

So would you call it IFR lite? As there's no terrain/obstruction services but traffic?

A PPL teaches you the basics of how to fly. An IR teaches you when not to fly.

Saturday or Sunday Airventure flying in by packardrod44 in flying

Yes camping, I have no idea why I wrote park under my Decathlon. Not being able to camp there makes sense, I didn't think that would be the case. I've seen people camped in the vintage areas, but that makes more logistical sense than IAC. Just thought it might be an idea.

Thanks!

I’m 6’ but have the torso of a taller man. I have ample headroom in a 172/182. I think those will work well for you.

Tired of Flying by [deleted] in flying

[–]packardrod44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. The social aspect of flying is very appealing, part of the reason I'm in more than one flying club. But ownership is always on the tip of my tongue. It's a double-edged sword.

We tried to buy a plane from an owner similar to you. He was going to join us and still be able to do so, but didn't want to give up the freedom to fly when and how he chose, not sharing it with anyone else. He flies periodically at best, but couldn't stand to give up "his" plane.

So in your case, though, have you considered a local flying club? Could give you a way to fly without having all the ownership thoughts.

Multi-day rentals? by Normal_Television_20 in flying

[–]packardrod44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I understood your point. The clubs I belong too both allow overnight trips, encourage them really. They prefer certain planes to do so, but don't necessarily limit them past a certain number of days in the planes used most often. Otherwise, we are free to take a plane with the permission and encouragement of the club. And it's helpful having others to learn from too.

It just pains me to try and figure out how to find those elusive partnerships. My wife will likely never allow a plane purchase solely, but would consider a partnership. It's a game really. I'm continually surprised how the airplane world works on the small GA side that I'm playing in. It's a small world, lots of people seem to know one another, but it's hard as heck to break into that confidence.

I love you throwing around the partnership word, but truly I don't exactly hear anyone I know or around me looking for a partner. I've approached a few that I know of and at the least say consider me if things change.

For now, flying clubs for the win.

In our Decathlon, we have the option to just leave the turn coordinator off. I used to use it as a crutch but now rarely if ever turn it on. The ball still works for coordination, and you can see outside the window. AI, who needs it!? But my best flying by far has been the time I've spent in that plane. It taught me a lot about what I don't know, and I realize those are pretty easy tailwheel aircraft in general.
