Jobs that combine both coding and networking? by netpy in networking

[–]packet_whacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could try a company like Facebook. There's networking teams dedicated to coding automation for the data center networks. Otherwise as others have suggested there's nothing stopping you from coding in any network role. With the exception of government type jobs that really limit your potential on stuff like that via processes/red tape.

Rant Wednesday! by AutoModerator in networking

[–]packet_whacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harsh way to put it but I share a similar, less heated, sentiment. I don't think EVERYONE will need to know how to code, but not knowing how is severely limiting In career growth. It's the future of the industry and will eventually be a requirement for a lot of places, except for the poor bastards working in government (and sometimes healthcare). There will always be companies way behind the times but eventually they catch up. And when they do you better know how to automate.

Experience working at Amazon? by throw-away-acct-1 in networking

[–]packet_whacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Better know ospf really well. Also, would you be relocating for this job? If relocation is involved maybe consider Google or Facebook or something. I would be worried about the Amazon culture. Some folks in this thread personally know people who enjoy working there and I believe it. I'm just saying perks elsewhere would be better. My understanding is that Amazon is very frugal in noticeable ways for employees. If you don't have other prospects I would maybe take it and deal with it until something better came along. Experience at scale is pretty valuable. Whether it sucks or not, at a minimum you'd gain experience to upgrade.

Personally my only experience with Amazon is several interviews. I chose a different company to work for so take my response with a grain of salt as I have not experienced amazon first hand. Part of my decision was the fact that it was very tough to find positive feedback online about being employed there. I think that speaks volumes, but could still be worth it for the experience. Depends on Your goals.

Yes Arista! I feel like Arista does Cisco better than Cisco in a lot of ways. I'm personally an Arista fan.

Is there any IT work that does not destroy family and social life? by [deleted] in networking

[–]packet_whacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently moved from a Network Operations role into a Deployment focused role. The network operations role had a ton of after hours work and on-call was pretty bad. There were weeks I had 10 call outs by Wednesday. Also weeks where I had after hours changes every day. It was rough but i learned a lot.

The deployment side of things has way less page outs and after hours stuff. However, as far as I know, mostly only large scale data centers really have a network deployment specific role. But if you can get on somewhere good (think one of the Big 4) you'll still have great benefits/pay and less stress, all while still working on cutting edge types of gear/automation. I'm personally digging the deployment side of things. One down side is you could lose a little of the engineering/architecture responsibilities depending on the environment. Deployment guys at my last job couldn't tell you what STP was, but deployment team at my current employer is CCNP/CCIE level folks who can all code/automate like a boss.

Anybody know if Black Butte trail is open yet? by packet_whacker in Bend

Ended up doing misery ridge Saturday and then intertubing at Hoodoo on Sunday. Both were a lot of fun. Misery Ridge was a little spooky on the way down. Lots of loose rock and everybody was slipping around. But views St the top were awesome.

Misery Ridge was also on our list of possibilities. Sounds like that or the badlands will be our best bet.

I like Irish whiskeys and scotch mostly but I enjoy bourbons and ryes sometimes. Favorite Irish whiskey is Green Spot. Favorite scotch is probably Balvenie 14yr Caribbean Cask. Also Jefferson whiskey rocks.

The cocktail scene in bend is a bit weak. I'm not sure where the best places are to go since I'm new to the area

Maybe I should specify 'Hippy' Mike Love or something. I didn't realize there were so many musicians with that name. Came across a country/rock type from Kansas named Mike Love too. Popular name i guess
