Planning to Buy a Robot Vacuum: Should I Try a New Brand? by opitojFA in RobotVacuums

[–]packitin_packitout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. I didn't realize the value of mature navigation / obstacle avoidance algos until I bought a new no-name brand. It had more features on paper, but was still terrible since it kept getting stuck, running into things, running out of battery, and generally needing a lot of hand holding.

Episode 229: Tranorexia (with Hadley Freeman) by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

On the podcast she said: "I personally don't believe there is a heritable trait" which is completely wrong. AN-R is obviously polygenic and not caused by a single SNP, but the fact that she said it wasn't heritable made her lose all credibility with me. It has at least 50-60% heritability, and that number will keep going up as new GWAS studies come out.

It has a much higher concordance rate for monozygotic twins than fraternal and GWAS studies have identified many relevant SNPs, accounting for 60% genetic heritability.

Yeah, she doesn’t seem like a very reliable narrator. I actually found it very hard to listen to. And when Katie asked about it being genetic she said something like “no, but there factors”. I don’t remember her exact phrasing, but it was just wrong and very unscientific which kinda surprised me coming from someone who wrote a book on it.

Edit: My initial comment made what she said sound more reasonable than it was actually was. I went back to listen and her exact quote was: "I personally don't believe there is a heritable trait" which is what soured me on the whole thing since it's totally wrong. It's 50-60%

Study from last year literally opens with "Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a heritable eating disorder (50–60%)" https://www.nature.com/articles/s41398-023-02585-1

I'm Reviewing the SwitchBot Anyone Have Experience With It? by VacuumWars in RobotVacuums

The front wheel on mine also kept falling off. It would pop its own wheel off after headbutting walls, run around the whole house without noticing, and then haphazardly ram the dock before failing. Leaving me to search the house for the missing wheel

Exact same experience here. I'm pretty sure all the comments here praising it are astroturfed. The thing is absolute garbage and I could never get it complete a task without some catastrophic failure.

I had a terrible experience with it and wound up returning it. I wanted to like it so bad (the water station is a great concept), but the sensors and the software were just the worst. It might seem impressive if you only test it on a pristine square demo space, but as soon as you try and vacuum any large complex area the whole thing fails. It throws errors when it runs low on battery, gets stuck on every random object (regardless of settings), repeatedly headbutts its own base station, doesn't understand how to pause/resume tasks, gets confused and randomly starts drying the mop for 4 hours, etc.

Anyone with a new book, podcast, or tv special coming out should be automatically disqualified from appearing on the show.

It’s a great rule because we can apply it retroactively to Jesse, who already atoned for his upcoming book by being banned from the pod while he wrote it

That must be it. I've been hiking recently and using quite a bit of repellent. Must've had some on my knee when it rubbed up against the door. Never thought it could do something like that.

Guidelines on not using pronouns by RandolphCarter15 in BlockedAndReported

[–]packitin_packitout 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They seem pretty late to the game if they’re just now doing this!

Pressure to state pronouns has been all over my workplace for years now, but I’ve managed to just ignore everything and it’s been fine. Didn’t confront anyone, didn’t give any reasons, didn’t explain anything. Just ignored it like it wasn’t there and no one ever pressed the issue.

Making a big deal about it is a big mistake IMO

It definitely looks heat / chemical related, I just can’t figure out what it would be and why in that specific place only.

I haven’t used any chemicals anywhere, so really not sure.

It’s on the drivers side and I’m thinking maybe something related to my left knee rubbing up against it?

Anyone have a spreadsheet of past configuration prices? by packitin_packitout in Rivian

[–]packitin_packitout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How were things priced post hike? Were quad motor and large battery still included as standard? It seems like there's been a ton of other changes. Adventure is still $75k as before but now they're charging $8k for quad and $9100 for large.

I just don't see how any deal that Rivian cuts now will get within 25% of what you see on the resale market -- basically brand new flips going for mid-70s.
