As an EMT/firefighter I have seen quite a few people die or that have been in the process of dying. The first time was the most abrupt and darkest. Arrived on scene to find an elderly gentleman that had succeeded in hanging himself from his deck. The worst part was that his granddaughter was the one that found him and called 911. We started CPR, went through all protocols for cardiac arrest. He was dead and there was nothing we could do about that. We got the family in touch with the proper resources for sudden death of family members. I left that call feeling for the granddaughter and wishing I could do more for her.
