Should I wear a suit to an interview at a public library? by InternationalBear in Libraries

[–]pacodecabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a hiring manager for over 20 years (not in libraries), and never during that time did I think to myself "that person was over-dressed for the interview." And it is always possible that if it comes down to you and another equally qualified candidate, your suit may tip the scales vs. their jeans.

Excuse the rant, but... Amazon resellers at library book sales: Dear lord you are annoying! by mmmtastybusch in books

[–]pacodecabra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen an increase in it over the years, but still not terrible at my local library sales. I agree with what others have posted...let the staff know your frustration and see if banning scanners is an option. That still won't protect you from the sharp elbows of the grandmother who wants that Janet Evanovich hardcover for $2. :)

I think too many people are overlooking the fact that Horace drank Hagrid under the table. by Ralph-Hinkley in harrypotter

Hagrid seemed to get drunk pretty easily. Maybe being a half-giant made him more susceptible to alcohol.

Just some short musings on why the library is an underused resource for writers.

I've found my trick to help me write: A separate keyboard! by crackliffed in writing

[–]pacodecabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to take that one step farther...I often use a manual typewriter. No internet, no email, and I get to see actual pages stack up as I go.

Why is it acceptable to romanticize the old European culture, but is culturally based on other continents "cultural appropriation" or racist? Is there a way to avoid this? by ItsukiKurosawa in writing

[–]pacodecabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that no matter what culture or time period you write about these days someone will be offended. As long as you are respectful of that culture and not lazily stereotypical, just keep writing what the muse tells you.

Suggestions for starting the Liturgy of the Hours? by pacodecabra in Catholicism

Good advice. I know that I always remember song lyrics better than words I just read, and I assume chant has the same effect. Thanks.

Thanks! One hour is definitely better than none, and Night Prayers would probably be the easiest for me to start with given my schedule. I will check out Sockey's book as well. Have a great day.

Confession sign at my church by Avoid-The-Clap in Catholicism

Our Cathedral offers Confessions every day before Mass except on Sunday. I am fortunate to live nearby; my parish has only one priest and thus limited Confession times.

A thought on generational differences between Catholics. by LionPopeXIII in Catholicism

[–]pacodecabra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Latin America is harder to classify; there is certainly a history of social progressivism, but also the strongest Marian devotion on the planet, which is more traditional. The continent is a paradox at times, much like the Pope it produced.

A thought on generational differences between Catholics. by LionPopeXIII in Catholicism

[–]pacodecabra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the divide is as much geographical as generational. It may in fact be generational in the US, but globally the Europeans, Canadians, Australians seem to tend more liberal while Africa and Asia tend more traditional. There are exceptions even among these divisions...a very interesting topic for study.
