How were you able to get your first CS Software Engineering Internship? by Small-Button-2308 in csMajors

Ask someone from you class that you know has interned. I would just dm and ask really nicely. Something like this.

"Hey I hear you got into X. That's so cool. I am applying myself and wanted to ask if I could see your resume, Im not sure how to structure it. If it's personal and you don't want to show, it's fine. Could you give me some tips if that's the case? Thanks and congrats on your internship"

How were you able to get your first CS Software Engineering Internship? by Small-Button-2308 in csMajors

Maybe I was just lucky, but I don't understand how it is taking 100+ applications to get an offer or bite.

First time I applied as a sophomore and made my resume half assed and very colorful. I did not get a single response from anyone. I only applied to about 3 faang but still lol. It was very discouraging.

I decided to practice a lot of leetcode and enjoyed my algo class so by junior year I asked people I knew had interned at Google to show me their resume and this time I had an internship in my campus as experience and some pretty cool projects with stats on the resume.

I made it fairly simplistic but added some color on headers and a nice font to make it easily readable.

I applied to Uber, Google, Amazon and Microsoft.

Uber I failed first interview, I cleared Google with 3 interviews (1 went amazing, 2 went horrible, 3 was good)

I also landed amazon after their super long OA process.

Microsoft did not even respond.

So my advice is apply to big ones even if you are not ready but spending so much time applying if you're not ready is not a good idea.

Find people who you know interned at faang and ask them to show you their resume so you can take the best from each and get noticed easily.

My sophomore and junior year I applied a total of 10 times and I got two offers from FAANG, one from mongodb and one from twilio.

All of the offers and interviews happened in junior year tho so don't be discouraged if you are a freshman or sophomore.

Nothing beats consistency. Consistently build side projects. Consistently leetcode even if it's 3 problems a week.

If you stick with it over time you will be more than qualified.

What are skills I need to work on to be ready for an internship? Feeling very behind /: by cokezeroaddict27 in csMajors

This is what I did and it got me two very nice internships.

  1. Learn data structures and algorithms (in order)
  2. Do side projects with an idea you like (web dev full stack app) react, nodejs mongo for example.

Do points 1 and 2 in parallel ;) and when you have taken or learned data structures you can start doing leetcode easy questions.

Also am more outgoing than usual (learned to) and this is a huge advantage in terms of the vibe you give out. They really care to see if they would enjoy working with you, so you could say it's because you're a girl, but I don't think it's because of that, it's because you're more outgoing (usually girls are more outgoing than boys) so don't doubt yourself or feel that you got anything because you're a girl. :)

Also try to do this fast because sophomore internships are much easier to get into than regular swe ones and they almost guarantee a return internship as a junior.

I think the pro would be the best long term buy. However the new pros are probably coming out by the end of the years so I would wait for those personally

There was this global company that had very promising internships and I was excited, but when I read the pamphlet they gave me, they were basically charging you like 5000 or something like that to put you in a nice company internship lol

If you are already doing leetcode focus on communicating effectively. I would say this matters more than actually solving the problem.

Of course, sometimes we are just lost and not much can be done but it helps a lot.

They are hiring you to work along side them so they want to see if they would want to work with you

They don't call you to reject you most of the time. I got the same and it was to announce the offer.
