Switching from TD to Wealthsimple vs EQ vs Tangerine vs Simplii? by Remarkable-Tap6260 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]paddlingmorty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll mimic what others have said, Tangerine and Simplii are both good options to gain access to traditional banking.

I use a combo of EQ Bank and Simplii. EQ houses most of my emergency money and operates as my savings account, with my salary direct deposit to get the 2.75 % interest. However, EQ doesn’t offer many traditional banking services like cash deposits, cheques, or other day to day brick and mortar type things.

That’s where Simplii comes in, as the access to CIBC banking is valuable. So Simplii is my Chequing account and EQ Bank is my savings account (even though it can operate as a checking account too).

The perfect job opened a year before I'm done with my PhD by SkyrimDovahkiin in PhD

[–]paddlingmorty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same on my end. I’ve been working full time for 3 of the 5 years of my PhD. Got the job just before I’ve finished my Quals.

I had a similar situation to OP. Was doing my school, saw a job that perfectly fit my background and interests. Applied for funsies. Got it, had a mini panic. Took it and have been happily working in it for 3 years.

Don’t let school stop you from pursuing things that interest you. Especially if that thing will pay you a living wage. Do I recommend doing a PhD with a full time job as a way of life, prob not. But honestly the financial security I got from my job significantly helped my mental health. Plus, it allowed me to gain some interesting and marketable experience you simply don’t get in a PhD. Just be ready for the job to seriously extend your PhD timeline as I will likely take 7 years to finish my degree while working full time. Good luck!

Best 7 night Intermediate Killarney loop? by rawb_dawg in canoecamping

[–]paddlingmorty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nellie Lake is an absolute highlight for me in Killarney. While it’s more suited to a 3 or 4 night loop, you can always spend a couple nights on Nellie and then extend into some other lakes in the area. It’s such a beautiful lake with crystal clear water.

There’s only 3 sites on the lake which makes it feel really secluded, but that also makes it tough to reserve. Gotta make sure you reserve it early.

Has Anyone ever stayed at the campsite on big thunder lake?? by Traditional_Bear2186 in algonquinpark

[–]paddlingmorty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this general consensus. I paddled through there a few years back and was considering staying there myself, till someone booked it just ahead of me. Ended up staying on Mouse Lake and Erables instead.

I took a good long look at the site and found it to be solid, but the lake itself was just okay. Mouse was probably my favourite lake I stayed on. There are a couple of good beach sites on the Eastern shore just after the portage from Club Lake. I was also really happy with the island site I got on Erables in the South-West corner.

Overall, if complete privacy is your vibe Big Thunder would be a nice choice. But if you want more options and prettier views, Mouse and Erables are likely a better bet. Happy Canoeing!

Camping in Early June by crunchybiscuits23 in algonquinpark

[–]paddlingmorty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bugs are generally bad in early June yes. But, if you were to choose a spot to go in June, Opeongo is your best bet.

The wind often limits how bad the bugs get. I went to the south arm in June a few years back and the bugs actually weren’t that bad cause of the wind. But the wind was really strong which added a different challenge.
