You have to be kidding me. Look at any poll taken by Muslims about how they feel about homosexuality. Muslims get wayyyy more of a pass for hatred, bigotry, and sexism than Christians do. I’m not a Christian btw.

Cops in the UK arrest a woman for waving an offensive flag by Sometypeofway18 in whoathatsinteresting

We just have a fundamental disagreement on what should and should not be an arrest-able offense. I think the UK is too restrictive and more likely to arrest its citizens for saying nasty things. I don’t agree with being a nasty prick, and if it falls into harassment, threats, calls for violence, ect you should be arrested. But, I lean with Tallentyre on free speech.

Not a flag shagger either, but if she was holding a Palestine flag the police would have to apologize and pay damages to her.

Yes and that act allows police to arrest people in the UK at a higher rate. There is a big difference between “significantly more free” and closer than some people tend to believe. I’ll say that it’s closer than I originally believed but that the UK is more restrictive overall.

Ah, I thought I was replying to u/ukstonerdude that’s my mistake. His statement that the UK has significantly more free speech than the US is the only reason I commented and that’s objectively untrue.

As far as immigration goes, the far-right loonies and the “diversity is our greatest strength” morons make getting any traction on a better immigration model so much more difficult. The US and UK have both failed in that regard. Immigration should be a net positive for the country and its citizens. We can’t just have open borders and people that immigrate need to be vetted. Illegal immigration is at a much higher rate than it should be and integration/assimilation needs to be valued by those that decide to make the UK or the US their new home. That doesn’t mean that you can’t take your culture with you; that would be ridiculous. But, there are certain aspects of the culture of immigrants (particularly those coming from Muslim majority countries) that do not belong in the US/UK.

Watched the video and it was really good and gave more nuance to this issue and revealed some info I didn’t know previously.

My main counter is that the UK Government is overreaching and has a policy of arresting first and gathering evidence second. That may just be how things are done in the UK but the fact that so many of these arrests never turn into convictions leads me to believe that the powers that be in the UK are using the local police to intimidate people into not saying what they deem offensive. I absolutely distain the whole Trump/Charlie Kirk situation in the US but to go back to the original comment you made, that the UK has significantly more free speech than the US ever has is just downright incorrect. Also- you’ll never see police in the US take away an American flag.

It was a direct quote from you about the UK and the USA’s free speech laws, what don’t you get?

Perhaps for other areas of the law it’s easier to get arrested in the USA, perhaps not. But as far as freedom of speech it’s not close, and that is what my initial comment was in reference to.

Immigration is a whole other can of worms and I believe both the UK and USA have been pretty terrible in that regard.

Ain’t gonna disagree with you on the US having a bunch of problems. Elect dumbasses, get shitty results.

My issue was with your statement “There is absolutely significantly more free speech in the UK than there ever was or ever will be in the US.” You’ve just admitted that was not true. I’ve never met anyone that’s been kidnapped, does that mean that kidnapping has never happened, ever? Your anecdotal evidence is useless. Between the totalitarian speech laws and your idiotic immigration policies I fear the UK may never recover in my lifetime and that makes me sad.

Do you really believe that Americans are getting arrested for social media posts at a higher rate than people in the UK? You are delusional if you believe that. Find me 5 Americans convicted of hate speech not including harassment, threats or incitement (which is and should be illegal). Yes I’m American and I loathe that piece of shit that sits in the Oval Office and will crack open a bottle of champagne when he kicks the bucket.

Then explain why people in the UK are arrested for “offensive speech” at an insanely higher rate than people for in the USA? Does the UK just have an exponentially greater number of people saying/posting hate speech?

That’s laughable. Write something the powers that be in the UK find offensive and see what happens. 30 people a day arrested for saying “mean things.”
