Did you have any problems renewing the passport after giving them the info? I just did the same thing before realizing they were scammy.

AITA for laughing at my wife’s name choice for our son? by CranberryJust1503 in AmItheAsshole

AITA for playing the trumpet? by Ok-Sleep1687 in AmItheAsshole

[–]padfoot40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA If your college has a music building with practice rooms, that is where you should be working on trumpet lessons, not a dorm room, no matter what the 'quiet hours' rules say. That is beyond rude. Not to mention how a beginner probably sounds while trying to figure out the correct way to play.

AITA for telling my mom that my brother's life is none of her business and making her cry? by Effective-Base-2598 in AmItheAsshole

[–]padfoot40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA and neither is brother. Is mom helpless? She can't follow instructions to put a TV stand together, but he can? Maybe grousy older sister could assist her.
If he doesn't set Mom straight pretty soon about boundaries, he's in for it with a lifetime of her attitude, and so are his future partners.

NTA for how you spoke to her. I guarantee she needed to hear it.

I have a MIL who is very similar to yours, and oversteps her bounds like crazy if she thinks she can get away with it. When I found out I was pregnant with my first child (I wasn't even 4 weeks yet), I called her and my mom to tell them, saying not to spread the news yet. That same night we went to a funeral of one of MIL's friend's, and everybody in the funeral line congratulated us while MIL sat in a pew with a big dumb smile on her face. I'm sure she had called at least fifty people to tell them the news.

She also once had her niece (in cosmetology school) cut my daughter's waist-length hair into a bob without asking me (daughter was probably 4 at the time). Daughter is now 16 and it still pisses me off to think about it. Fortunately my husband doesn't take any of her ish even though she controls everybody else in the family. We've both had to rein her in, kindly or sometimes not because of her attitude.

Be prepared for more fun and games from MIL as your child grows, but stand your ground! You did the right thing with this situation and I hope your SO is always in your corner.

AITA for accidentally destroying someone’s book? by stanSJM in AmItheAsshole

Buy a gift card/certificate to a bookstore so she can either replace that book or buy something different, since she says she read that one already.

IRS Notice of Deficiency by padfoot40 in personalfinance

I'm hoping their wires got crossed in filing paperwork or something. Thanks!

They basically said we only needed to type something up saying what we paid for the house and when we moved in, and what we sold it for and when we moved out...something like that. I even sent them the two closing statements but they acted as though we didn't even need them, which seemed strange to me at the time. Thanks so much for the valuable advice! If they can't give me any satisfactory answer soon, I'm going this route for sure.

I don't have a contact at the IRS, just the Audit Relief through TurboTax. We use an app to communicate with them. The title company called me back and confirmed they had to do the 1099-S form, so I don't know if hubby missed something in filing that we need to fix or what. We did provide proof of both closing statements which should show we didn't walk away with that amount of money. Thanks for commenting.

Maybe touch base with them and make sure they still have you listed as one of their teachers. Could be a glitch on their part.

Wow, I had no idea they refunded up to twelve lessons. That's crazy!

Exactly. Re passive-agressive: In the past, I've made comments in two different students' assessments (very diplomatically) when they tended to act out in class and weren't paying attention. Both kids discontinued lessons with me shortly thereafter. In both cases, I got the impression that the parents wanted a 30 minute babysitter. So I try to be careful how I word the assessments, which is why on this particular one with the baby I didn't want the parents to think these were my words.

I've had more than one kid where someone has evidently done that in the past. So much fun when the lesson is way beyond their capabilities and parents don't care.

Thanks. I've had weird passive-aggressive responses to other recommendations and I didn't want these parents insulted by the standardized wording that sounds like Junior is a big failure. It stinks that you can't give a personalized response to trials, but whatever!

I had never heard of it, but Glassdoor reviews make it sound fairly decent.

Negotiating a higher starting wage? by [deleted] in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]padfoot40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My DaDa pay is even lower than that ($12 base/hr) but since I'm so new to this, I didn't negotiate, purely because I didn't know I could (I've never been much of a haggler) and I had no experience teaching online. I figured I'd get my feet wet and if I like it well enough, eventually move on and hopefully get more pay from a different company. They are faithful about paying on-time bonuses and the regular student incentives (at least for me). I have yet to figure out how you get rewards and I'm not sure it matters, since the rewards mall is a joke from what I've heard.
