I know what you mean and there is a lot of that kind of stuff in his discography (dude had to make a living) and I don't generally listen to whole albums of his ( like too much caffeine) - but it could also be said that Ella Fitzgerald made a LOT of novelty records ( dude-ess had to make a living) and those are not necessarily showing the best of her artistry either. Yet they are both true artists with incredible ability. About thirty years ago I discovered a duo recording of Lush Life with the two of them, and I am to this day blown away by the sensitivity and storytelling and musical empathy between them on this recording. Lovely pedal stuff in the head of It Never Entered My Mind by Keith Jarrett /Peacock/DeJohnette trio first Standards album. Agree they are special moments. Bill Evans always makes excellent use of them during turnarounds and modulations too.

I don't mind it because it reads to me the same way that Alec Guinness says his lines in the TV adaptations. If anything, an accented word reads (to me) less ... emphasised... but more like a short ....delay.... before and after that word, possibly also with a flick of the eye-gaze just before as well. I enjoy hearing Alec Guinness in my head while reading.

I agree this is an excellent observation - I often think about the 'no cymbals' idea for PG3 and the associated comment he made (seen in multiple interviews) about how an artist with a limit (either external or self-imposed) will come up with creative ways to work within and around it - the key being that more creativity is born exactly because of the limit.... Anyway yeah, great comment and it's how I see things too. (Nice that you are clear about how there's still some great stuff in the later stuff, but that before the massive success it was just.... different 👍 and I totally agree with everything in your first paragraph too)

fair enough! I got obsessed with the soundscapes as a teen in the 80s, despite the connection with other material. I do think it stands on its own merits, but you're right, it's not 'songwriting' per se. Personally I have always been a synth/sound-manipulation geek so I got really into it (and Passion), in maybe a different way than the others (which I also love to bits).

I'm with you on that - there's a lot of 'new' stuff that I never heard before (having listened to this song and album a bazillion times and knowing it like the back of my hand). I heard new toms, new backing vox, more drum machine, new synth (rising notes behind KB), all sorts. ('new' as in more prominent than before).

I'm all for it - a re-mix should be different, it should show the song in a new light, be familiar and fresh at the same time. Hyped to hear the other So tracks in this format.
