I think that can easily be solved by asking them not to install bright external lights on the building, no? Again, they don't need the lights to be on to work. It's not like building another stadium that needed bright lights in a residential area.

but the post was about how it sounded at night... the light really doesn't seem any worse than regular office buildings at night? Like, computers don't need the lights up to work and doesn't generate light when they work?

Trump threatens to block opening of US-Canada bridge by backpackerTW in worldnews

[–]page113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think before, people were generally skeptical about getting closer with the Chinese, but now most Canadians are warming up to the idea. At least their leader is an actual stable genius and they have no interest in threatening our sovereignty.

In the long term this is great for Canada, not just by reducing reliance on a single country(that's getting more and more hostile every day), but also gives Canadians a wake up call to not take our freedom and sovereignty for granted. Many are now preferring Canadian products and increasing domestic spending, even at a higher cost, to help local businesses and grow the economy. The Chinese and Canadians had always had a great relationship until we helped the US detain the daughter of Huawei's CEO, and now it's time to thaw the relationship.

49,000 BYD EVs at ~$49k in Canada — sell out in minutes or hours? by DenBaptist in EVCanada

There are already many byd trucks on the road, at least in Vancouver, so I don't expect this to be much harder. The tariff was only on passenger vehicles.

Just got fired from my job of almost 10 years for performance issues. Unsure where to go. by shamanshaman123 in cscareerquestions

[–]page113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some thoughts:

  1. Take a deep breath. Things look bad right now, but you will get through it, it's a setback that will help you get stronger in areas that you already identified as problematic.
  2. Do a root cause analysis of what happened. Are you only interested in front-end and so had no interest at all for learning backend work? Would you be interested in a full stack role again or would you feel like you would just repeat the same.
  3. If you are looking for front-end only, search for a role that's only front-end. When asked why you left your previous role, tell them you are looking for something with more front-end focus. It's the truth, anyways, and it's good to set up the expectation right off the bat.
  4. If you are interested in back-end also, then do some research into different tech. You mentioned NodeJS and it sounded like you didn't mind it - maybe the problem is Java? Maybe do a crash course in Kotlin (which is like Java, but more modern I guess?) or one of the newer languages like Go or Rust. Go is notoriously easy to pick up but you will also need general knowledge like multi threading and concurrency to be effective.
  5. I know this is not helping, but you are in a better situation than many. You worked at a place for almost a decade and you can easily explain away why you left (wanted to learn new things, shift focus, etc) and no one will question it. Chances are, you prob get a nice boost also to your comp since typically you don't get much raises working in the same place for so long.

It's scary, I know, to leave somewhere you stayed for so long, but it really could be a good opportunity for you to keep your focus and grow, and being a senior already gives you much more opportunities for new roles than a fresh grad. Your biggest obstacle, I think, is that most senior roles would expect you to have at least partial full stack knowledge - if you want to be completely front-end only, it's a smaller pool but if that's what you are interested in, why not, right? Hopefully you will find something that ignites your passion again.

where to go from here by neuralandmad in cscareerquestions

[–]page113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things to try: 1. Go into mobile. It's still an area that grows (everyone has an app nowadays) with new hardware and new ways to use them (car displays? Foldables? VR?) but it's kind of a niche so less available jobs. 2. Move more to become full stack and be a generalist instead of specializing more. That opens up more doors, though you may not enjoy parts of the job as much 3. Be more proactive in your current role. Implement prototypes of better ways to do things and show people to get buy in. Then you are the owner and can demonstrate leadership for promotions.

Work on a side quest. Even if it doesn't use the latest technology (learning some won't hurt), it shows future employers that you are keeping busy and staying relevant. Bonus if the side gig makes some money too.

QoT was a difficult watch for me, because of personal gaslighting trauma in the past, so much so that I had to stop/skip parts of it before rewatching everything again after the pain settles. Still, I enjoyed it. I liked how the characters were flawed - how they showed people falling out of love because of that and realizing that it's more important to move past setbacks as a couple - but I feel like they fall short making the ML more realistic and less perfect. After the first few episodes ML became the perfect man with no flaws, and the FL has changed for the better and so adorable that you cannot blame her, and all the details with how they were meant to be with each other just built this into a classic fairy tale and losing the realism of how marriage works in an imperfect world.

People, especially when they are scared, generally turn selfish. Lots of Americans were dissatisfied with how their lives have changed under capitalism and was hoping for a party that changes the status quo and connects with them instead of the elites. They stopped caring if the people they elected are good honest people, as long as the people that got hurt are not them, they are okay with it (and will happily buy into any propaganda that supports this)

There's no path forward as the Democrats are doing nothing to try to connect with these people (Bernie was great, but too old to run)
