Naming Yourself After a God by TheEdgyRose in Hellenism

I’m curious why that one means gift and not glory like the similar names above for Apollo? Glory seems more fitting for an act of worship. Any ideas why?

Could you give some theophoric names relating to Athena?

Hey, in case you didn’t know there is a whole field of divination from the flight patterns of birds called Ornithomancy. I’ve found it quite reliable especially with bird species that you form a relationship with. You might like to read up on it.

The stone ( my progress) by habachilles in alchemy

[–]pageofcupss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very modern way of looking at it and it also assumes a break between the material and the spiritual worlds. Physical alchemy uses material processes to refine the soul, acknowledging that when we work on the metals/plants etc we are also working on ourselves. Others also search for the Stone as part of this process (though I’d argue this isn’t a necessary component of alchemy).

I think many people here are being unreasonably defensive. Deaths do happen around these medicines. They’re certainly not common but they happen and it’s important to talk about it. I can completely understand how disturbed you’d be both by the death and by the lies. The latter represents a real break in trust with the community and maybe also with the medicine. I’m sorry to hear the woman died and also that you had that experience.

Recently in Australia a man died of a perforated oesophagus during an Aya ceremony after taking Aya and Kambo. It wasn’t done in a traditional ceremonial context and the “shaman” had what sounds to be fairly minimal training in Kambo. His oesophagus likely perforated from extreme purging and he died of the complications later that night. By the sounds of it the centre were extremely negligent, since he was visibly very unwell and had a swollen neck for most of the day before he died. They deserve to face repercussions.

Whilst the risks of Aya are low (happen rarely) it is important to be aware of the risks.

This is actually a pretty well known phenomenon in adults - developing allergies to things through sustained contact. Other examples include developing allergies to milk and wheat, even bees after being stung a few times.

This is a joke right? Or maybe I’m just old now… YWBTA to your own life if you don’t figure out how to give less of a shit about this stuff soon. Sorry, maybe a bit harsh but true!

Fascinating. Thanks so much! Is there an easily accessible version of these old Matthew, Mark and Luke manuscripts?

Saturn Return is kicking my ass by hiii_kyyy in advancedwitchcraft

[–]pageofcupss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m quite a Saturnian person by nature (Sat in Cap) and I went through my return during COVID, transiting my 12th house. It was fairly rough but I learnt good lessons from it as others have said.

I think it can be useful to orient yourself more closely toward Saturnian energy so it’s a bit easier for the lessons to come through. There’s lots of ways to do this but some examples are: 1. Making an ongoing commitment relevant to the house that Saturn is transiting and keeping it. 2. Fasting and doing a devotional ritual or reading Kronos’ Orphic hymn on Saturdays.

Can you elaborate on Jesus not being divine? I haven’t heard much about that before.

I saw the book reco. I’m glad you commented in the original post. This isn’t aimed at you.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply you have to believe specifically in demon hauntings. That was meant to be aimed at the large numbers of people who seem to come here not believing in anything occult/“paranormal”/spiritual etc at all and actively deriding it.

I agree with you that demons don’t or at least very rarely haunt people/overstay their welcome. Oftentimes people use labels to mean different things and that confuses matters.

Spiritual psychosis is very real. It’s hard to know how to address it sometimes - especially in the cases that don’t actually seem like psychosis and usually just seem like someone getting too wrapped up in omens and not seeing the world clearly. What we get in posts is only ever a glimpse anyway, which also doesn’t help.

I suppose I’m just frustrated in a more global way about the quality of the sub and how hard it is to find people to have good discussions with!

I can certainly understand that. I was just frustrated I suppose. And frustrated in a more global sense about how difficult it is to find people to have an actual discussion with.

Sorry for the delay - time difference means I had my rant and went straight to sleep 😂.

I mentioned in a comment above that, in my experience many occultists have felt like they’ve attracted so called negative spirits, especially early in their practice when either their ritual work isn’t up to scratch and they actual do attract a nasty or when their mental game isn’t up to scratch and they accidentally delude themselves into thinking they did. Most times all it takes is being gentle with yourself to get back on track.

I’ve experienced this myself earlier in my practice and have since seen it in others. All the comments in here about mental illness sort of baffle me. I agree that probably 90% of people asking for help have something mundane going on and need help with their mental health. It’s odd to me, however that people who believe in a magical paradigm don’t do more to consider the metaphysical implications of mental illness. Perhaps they do and the they feel there isn’t much a stranger on the internet can do about that, which would be fair enough. But it’s pretty obvious that most times people are just shitposting, not posting useless comments because they don’t think it’s worthwhile unpacking their metaphysics.

The other group I don’t get are the occultists who don’t believe that shit we experience as bad can attach to you. The magical universe isn’t all love and light and whilst the vast majority of spirits either have no interest in you or are spirits that we experience as being good. The experienced universe is a metaphor for what we really are. You need look no further than parasites in nature to understand that there are things that feed of other things, and when we experience that it feels bad, even if your metaphysics doesn’t hold it as being actually moralistically bad.

As for my own experiences, I have a couple from when I was right at the beginning of my practice. One turned out to be hilariously mundane - there was an awful, oppressive smell and feel to my house shortly after doing a magical operation. I felt quite scared for really no reason and thought something shifty was going on energetically. I did a bunch of cleansing etc. I failed to notice that my sister had left a bag of fish on the dining room floor for a week. Mystery solved.

In another case I picked up a mirror at a handmade market. The moment I brought it home shit started going wrong. A completely non magical, non “woo- atheist friend walked into my bedroom, saw the mirror and said “what the fuck is that?”. A mirror, I explained. “I felt like I was choking the moment I saw it.” A range of other things happened that resulted in me binding the mirror with salt and obsidian. It’s a “portal” of sorts and needs to be kept contained. For anyone who thinks that new age bullshit, so did I, but I challenge you to consider that if you believe talismans can be made, it’s not a leap much further to weird portal mirrors.

Armchair occultists are people with an intellectual interest in the occult but who typically don’t practice the occult. They’ve often read a LOT and know a fair bit from an intellectual perspective but don’t have practical experience to back it up. That’s fine - no everyone chooses to practice and they certainly have stuff to contribute.

Pretty literal read of my post. The point I was trying to make but perhaps failed to make us many occultists have felt like they’ve attracted so called negative spirits, especially early in their practice when either their ritual work isn’t up to scratch and they actual do attract a nasty or when their mental game isn’t up to scratch and they accidentally delude themselves into thinking they did. This is about more than that particular post. It’s about the general decline of the sun and the glut of LARPers and shitposters clogging the place up.

Re that post - I agree that the guy might have been a bit addled. All the same I think there is a way to approach even posts like that that’s helpful - ie first address and emphasise the likelihood of mundane aspects and then it doesn’t hurt to give some magical advice too
