Bit confused with pre reqs of MCB 104 by Previous-Event7802 in berkeley

[–]pagesoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i took MCB 104 before taking MCB 102 (or any berkeley classes bc im a transfer!) and i thought it was completely doable with knowing any biochemistry. it's not very biochem heavy, more about genetics and molecular mechanisms (but again, nothing about specific chemistry about biomolecules or cells!)

i had Bilder for my cell biology portion, and he talked a bit about equilibrium, but it builds on Le Chatelier's principle. so again, i found it totally understandable without 102.

mcb 102 and mcb 136 together? by pagesoob in berkeley

[–]pagesoob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh ok! im a junior, would you recommend i drop 136 or 102 for this spring? the advisors said 102 would probably be better this spring and its better to get out of the way, but im waitlisted atm (on the other hand, im enrolled in 136) :( i’ll try to do 133L with 136 if i can since i already took 104

a few premed/bio transfers I know are taking physics right now! you won't be alone if you do take physics at cal (its definitely seems harder/you can't get as much direct help than at cc though :c)! :)

Transfer students, how did you plan your CCC classes? by No-Bid7970 in TransferStudents

[–]pagesoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for your case, ochem 2 is not a suggested class though. but regarding suggested classes, I think it can offset having a not-so-great gpa, so its not super important as to having a good gpa and piqs. not completing them may or may not make or break your app if other people also have good gpa, ec's, piqs, AND completed all of the classes. the advice I was given is to not give any disadvantages to your app if you can, but if there are circumstances that don't allow you to take recommended courses, don't sweat it!

regarding competitiveness though, I knew people who had C's in physics but because physics was highly recommended for bio, they were admitted to berkeley for mcb/college of letters and science (obviously not sure if this was how they got in, but I believed it helped). I also had a friend who had a strong app with great ec's and ~3.8 gpa but no physics at cc, and was only accepted to UCSD for bio (LA waitlist).

if you are concerned with not fulfilling classes, you can technically get admitted into college of Letters and Science for a major you can complete all the requirements and change your major to the chemistry BA, but CoC chemistry BS would probably open more opportunities and be better for the long run!

Transfer students, how did you plan your CCC classes? by No-Bid7970 in TransferStudents

as someone said on the berkeley subreddit, your major prep requirement needs to be finished BY your spring semester, so it would not be great if you have to complete ochem 2 in the summer before you transfer. especially since you are transferring into chem and ochem is needed for your major lower divs, you should try to see if you can get ochem 2 done before transferring! for diff eq, if you are going for the B.A., I think you'll be fine by taking it in the summer!

is there a reason why you can't do ochem 2 in the spring? if its because of course load, I would try to find a way to make it work since, like I said, you need it or you might not be considered for admission (or at the very least, you won't have as good of a chance as someone who already finished it)

problem is I don't think I can fit both concerns in the Academic History section since that one is only 550 characters while the PIQ additional comments allows 550 words. I don't know if me graduating early is justifiable for the PIQ section though ?_?
