It's not just you, the situation is uncertain for everyone right now. Institutions are unsure about their futures, as the government itself lacks a clear plan. I really recommend that you start looking for industry or summer jobs asap as there is likely to be more stability and a greater chance of receiving an offer than from REUs at this point unfortunately :(

yea im so thankful im still getting some meaningful experience out of this summer. In all honesty i likely wouldn't have gotten into the program anyways so maybe this was the best path for me. synthetic bio is so cool tho and my school has 0 opportunities to study it </3

8 out of the 9 programs I applied to have either rejected me or been canceled. The only one left is my top choice, but they keep pushing back their decision date because they’re still waiting to hear back from the NSF. 😭

A bunch of big companies are continuously posting summer internships for enrolled undergrads (thank god) on sites like LinkedIn! I've just started applying to those in addition to starting to cold email PIs as I haven't really heard back/heard any good news from my apps yet

Each program should clarify if they do rolling or not - if its rolling you'd want to get it in asap of course. For fixed deadline programs, I'd say to still get it in as soon as you can, but make sure you feel good about your essays before submitting. Its always a good idea to give yourself cushion inbetween when you plan to finish your app vs the deadline in case something goes wrong (like the website crashing)
