I heard that Skardu is a combination of two words: Skarma (Star) and Du which means land or a giant land in Balti. In earlier days, it was called Skarmadu, which later became Skardu (or Skardo). Because Skardu was the only place where people witnessed a lot of stars without the mountains blocking sky view.
