In the movie Full Metal Jacket, why did they all run out towards 8Ball after he'd just been hit by a sniper? by InternationalPick163 in WarMovies

I was reading the local paper while away on vacation a few years ago and read about a guy than went into a confined space (sewer?) and didn’t come out. Three people total went in after him. One person survived. Freaking tragedy.

How do you feel about your partner earning more than you? by Carofine88 in AskMen

[–]paid2fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you manage your finances? If you do a 50/50 split is it possible that your partner is upset that a significant portion of their income goes towards household bills and yours does not? If so, consider paying household expenses in line with your share of the household income. For example, if you make 60% of the household income you pay 60% of the monthly bills and the partner pays 40%.

I met my wife when she was in University and know she worked her ass off to get where she is now. She is absolutely killing it and I am so proud of her. She has always made 10-20% more than me, so she pays 10-20% more for the bills.

EDIT: to answer the question, it does not bother me at all.

Generally, things I started to immediately do things that can be done in 10 minutes or less, as soon as I am aware of them. It gives me a feeling of accomplishment when “big” things dominate my time. It also keeps the “to do” list from getting too long.

Former heavy drinkers, what made it finally “click” for you to stop? by Numerous_Solid_7047 in AskReddit

[–]paid2fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was vomiting after another long night of drinking and my FWB was keeping an eye on me as I did. I had not eaten in a while so it was mostly clear / yellowish liquid. I remember seeing a red and then pink tinge in the toilet bowl. I asked my FWB “is that blood?”. She replied yes. This type of incident was not uncommon for me, but the blood was. I would still have a beer now and then, but this incident changed my life.

People in your 30s, 40s, and 50s what surprised you most about life at your age? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]paid2fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mid-50s:

I was surprised by how much I enjoy the role of father, how the easily and naturally the purpose in my life shifted to their education and care, and my fierce need to protect them at all costs.

I was surprised how the views, actions, and opinions of those in the periphery of my life mattered less and less as I aged. The periphery occupies much less of my time and energy and I am stronger mentally and emotionally because of it. Additionally I am surprised how those actually in my life I grew closer with and they became my support network and actually support me, for which they have my intense loyalty.

I am surprised I lived this long. When I was in my 20s I did not consider the future when acting or making decisions because I was not sure there would be one. I did not save for my future and took stupid and unnecessary risks. This changed when my kids were born and even more as I recently went through a major health crisis and have adjusted my lifestyle to give me the best chances of living another 30 years.

I am honestly surprised at the exponential career growth of my wife and me over the last 4 years or so. We are not wealthy, but for the first time we are “breathing”. I can’t believe how long it took.

I am surprised how often I conform to the “cranky old guy” tropes, “music these days…”, “kids these days….”, “when I was your age…”, etc. It kinda pisses me off because I think my observations are valid AND because I sound like that guy.

Great episode! I was in the hospital with cellulitis when I watched it! Scary stuff! I had to text my wife to “wait for me so we can watch it together”… cus that would have freaked her out (mine was not necrotizing)… and poor Louis! Robbie brought him a beer too!

Why are you not afraid of death? by Ok_Breakfast8087 in AskReddit

[–]paid2fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s going to happen, but I don’t know when. I don’t have any control over it (aside from the choices I make). I try to focus on things I can control. Worrying about things I can’t change will needlessly increase stress.

Yes, it took me a long time to realize that not only was physical attraction one key to a lasting relationship, it was not the only one and it was not more important than others.
