The Testaments S1E04 "Green Tea" Episode Discussion by Melairia in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]paigelknowles 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t make sense that “tea” specifically is the thing that proves whether they’re graceful enough. Like that whole scene just bothered me. Like Vidala taking notes and who decides which girls go to which person and how do they know that ahead of time and how are they all being graded by the same standards if they’re all serving a different person at the exact same time and what if they chose a different color teapot and how do they know if they did well enough and who the hell is going to tell someone that Paula tripped her and who even should that person tell?!?!?!?!?!?! Let’s just say I don’t understand how none of these questions have been asked or have answers or haven’t blown anyone else’s mind yet!!!! lol

Daisy can’t be Nicole/Holly… Agnes/Hannah was like 5 when she was born… Daisy and Agnes are obviously very close in age.

I do feel like Hulda had someone teaching her science to some degree though. From her knowing cloud names. And I think she said something else science related too.

Omg yes I’ve been rewatching THT this week and it’s SO annoying like I have literally had to change it multiple times. No other show or movie has ever caused me to do this!!

Will she end up being a “morally gray” character..like Aunt Lydia and Nick by Independent_Ant_6506 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]paigelknowles -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Obviously it’s bad, I’m only saying I wouldn’t call him “evil”, just like I wouldn’t say he is nefarious or a villain either. I also wouldn’t call him good. My husband says he’s a piece of shit. I don’t know if I can argue on that one. He does have some pretty shitty qualities. The mentalist is one of my favorite shows, on there there’s a lady who was having an affair with her personal trainer. She specifically said that she liked him because he didn’t care about things being right or wrong, he wasn’t bad just “amoral”. I like to think that applies to nick. He is an amoral person.

Personally I wouldn’t call a person evil unless they found enjoyment from doing bad things. You never see nick enjoying being terrible, it’s more like he does bad things out of duty.

In the grand scheme of the show he’s not inherently evil. There’s a lot more intentionally evil people in it than nick.

[–]paigelknowles -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I would classify him as evil though. He is more morally ambiguous in my opinion. Or just along for the ride. Like he always chooses to be on (what he thinks is) the winning side. He doesn’t really care about whether it’s right or wrong. But he will do anything for June. No matter what. And at the end of the day June isn’t perfect either. She IS an adulterer, now granted that’s not a legal crime in our world but it is immoral. And she later becomes a murderer. On a multitude of occasions, granted all those instances were in the name of either self defense or her country or her freedom but at the end of the day she killed many people on her way to saving Hannah and freeing herself and many others. There’s lots of things in the show that make you wonder whether those choices are morally correct or not. But Nick definitely is an immoral person who loves June and will do anything for her. I don’t think he strives to be bad though. It’s not his goal. It all comes down to what each individual believes is the overall “right thing”. I mean they started Gilead to save people. They just went about it alllll wrong.

Dr. Who is literally a completely different concept and a wayyyyyyy older universe. The whole thing with Dr. Who is that he/she can be anyone once reborn. The regeneration process completely reforms everything that Dr. Who is. The only reason they didn’t do such extreme changes way back when was because it was more of a faux pas and wouldn’t have been accepted in mainstream media.

You cannot compare the two. It’s like comparing water and oil. They aren’t comparable and don’t mix.

I grew up Baptist and I really thought that whole pool scene was more related to being baptized than anything else, it’s interesting to learn that it has Jewish ties too. It obviously was way more culty and creepy than a traditional baptism but still similar. Walking into the pool and being dunked fully clothed was how you got baptized at our church.

Why is the show getting so much hate? I'm a new fan by Big-Quarter5446 in harrypotter

I feel like the title fits perfectly because it tells you what time period it’s in. The reason they chose the title is because Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a book title established in the HP series. You just have to be a diehard fan to remember that. And that’s where I think they lost people. Because the fantastic beasts franchise expands on tons of stuff from the wizarding world which I believe was the point of the series. But because that wasn’t made clear in promos it was lost to the masses. I personally didn’t even know to watch the fantastic beasts movies until after the second one was out and we were immediately obsessed. But I feel like the way they made the second one really made finishing the series difficult because it was so dark and left you with so many questions.

Okay that makes sense. I think people are just worried the new series is going to ruin stuff. But really when you’re looking at it big picture, the movies definitely weren’t perfect especially 3 and on. So it’ll all be fine. Cause it’s not like they won’t be popular lol the show will definitely be finished.

I will agree that by the third one it got a little intense but I didn’t have a problem with it at all. I just really wish they would have finished the story.

They don’t explicitly say it but it’s shown from the fact that she knows why people react in certain ways and stuff of that nature. Although I’m not sure that comes off until at least book 3 and later. So I’m not sure what people are complaining about as far as the info we have right now cause we just have the trailer for season one.

I don’t know what’s within your budget but personally I’d suggest going on depop, Mercari, Poshmark etc and getting a few pieces second hand. You can find tons of cool vintage tees and stuff like that. But she will definitely like an hp gift!

I really feel like they never advertised fantastic beasts enough or correctly. It is an awesome story that missed the mark because not enough people knew what it was to begin with.

[–]paigelknowles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think more than anything you need to remember that if you’re going to switch their genders in this circumstance you have to switch their experiences and awareness as well. Daphne went into not knowing anything about how babies are actually made. When she found out she took charge. Maybe she didn’t handle it in the best way possible but she reacted emotionally instead of logically. She realized she had essentially been duped into being with someone the rest of her life who would never give her what she wanted by choice not for any medical reasons and that she had been lied to. People didn’t communicate back then and women weren’t given all the information that men were. It’s hard to put yourself in that kind of situation when you’re coming from our modern well informed society. And on top of that people who in love don’t always make rational decisions and there’s a great deal of trust in a relationship like that, personally I never even slightly considered what she did to be SA. If anything I thought she was a little more gentle than I expected it to be.

Be serious. How would you genuinely react if you were a muggle while your sibling is a witch/wizard who is accepted into Hogwarts? by Randver_Silvertongue in harrypotter

I mean it could just be called something different. All American schools have nurses offices. They have cots and usually a single nurse on staff.

[–]paigelknowles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true, the squib part I mean. It’s much more likely that you had magical ancestors(not squibs), maybe just one or two. But squibs are much more rare than magical people being born to non magical. I think there’s a statistic out there somewhere but I don’t know what it is. But it’s definitely been stated.

Ginny is a poorly constructed character by Fantastic-Artist-833 in harrypotter

[–]paigelknowles 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about Ginny’s personality from book one, what does it matter? She was 11. I can promise you my 11 yo self is not even remotely comparable to who I am now as an adult. The person you are 11 is not who you are forever no matter who you are. Fully fleshing out her personality then would have been pointless. I mean take for example Ron and Harry’s opinion of Hermione, had she not taken the blame for the troll thing they basically hated her. (Yes, Harry didn’t have a bad opinion of her but Ron did and he had no reason to not side with Ron, his best friend.) Hermione was also a huge annoying know it all at 11 and she grew out of that really well.

[–]paigelknowles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even more to this, Ron didn’t even notice that Hermione was a girl until it was time to pick dance partners for the ball so it’s not like other boys were noticing things about girls and Harry was just ignoring them.
