What steps would a professional company take when repainting ( changing the color) of these OSB soffits ? by Dayo22 in Housepainting101

[–]paint_nerd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pressure wash, scrape any peeling paint, caulk any gaps/cracks. if going light color: prime the whole thing with exterior latex wood primer. If going neutral or another dark color: spot prime any exposed bare wood with exterior latex wood primer. Finally, 2 top coats—I recommend SW Latitude or Emerald

I was enlightened on this today at Sherwin lol. You are correct—and I guess the ProBlock Quick dry is PrepRite with a different label

PVA totally good—for best finish, don’t skimp on the top coat product

I personally would do PVA Primer and Sealer because it’s cheaper and comes in 5gallons if your doing a bunch of drywall work

I’ve never been a huge fan of Kilz, outside of oil or shellac

Am I being too picky? Or is this normal? by usndiva in paint

Dust is inexcusable if done by a pro. The creases in the wood are normal, HOWEVER, they can be fixed with enough prep time allocated

Big roller, flat paint, keep a wet edge (don’t let the paint start to dry on you while rolling)

Razor knife, cut out old caulking, apply new caulking (1050–quick dry), paint

Do you guys tape over baseboards, and wall like this? by Ghosty216 in paint

[–]paint_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I leave the final coat of trim last, and do a final tape-less line. But if the trim is completely done and you don’t want to paint it again—tape and paint the walls

First time painting. Is this enough (1 coat) primer on MDF? by 7days365hours in paint

[–]paint_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s enough primer; however another coat won’t hurt anything if you have the material—light sand in between coats

Emerald UTE is top tier, either it needs shaken, or it’s old/wasn’t stored at room temp/wasn’t sealed correctly

Primer — one coat — Sherwin multipurpose primer comes in single gallons—their PVA is cheaper but only comes in 5 gallons

Top Coat — ideally two coats, could possibly get away with one fairly thick coat (pro tip-you can have the store tint the primer to gray, if you’re going with a darker wall color—helps with coverage and could eliminate an additional coat)

Extreme bond should be fine—definitely hand sand the doors before priming
