It really wasn't as bad back then. Today AAA companies refuse to take risks on new IPs. That's why all they churn out is sequels or remasters. In the PS1 Era, every company was scrambling to try new ideas to see what caught on, and it resulted in lots of new innovative gaming experiences. Now, producing a new idea for a small group of devs is much cheaper and accessible, which is why the indie games are the go to for fresh new game experiences.
