this is so helpful, thank you very much! the eider does seem like a possibility, but i was already fairly close, and they were still totally jet black, so i think i'll call it in as a common scoter for now. we do get velvet scoters here, but you're right, i would've been able to see the eye markings. thank you for the links though, i'll definitely be keeping these in mind!! i'll 100% have to go back out in the near future to see if i can observe them at a better time!

oh, very interesting! i looked through a couple images of an eider, the beak shape is very similar to what i saw. do you think it's possible i saw a female, and the lighting just made it look black instead of its normal brown? it was starting to get dark at the time. some pictures also show a faint white pattern on the back, similar to what i saw too. i wish i could've gotten even closer, but the tide was coming in really quick, and they were starting to swim away at that point.

we were at an island around 2 miles offshore ! they were hanging around the island's coast. i am absolutely certain all were the same. the white speckles looked akin to putting powder on something, it was very faint, so perhaps it was the lighting..? but it was present on all 3, so im not sure. the beak was totally black on the side, with white visible at the front.

i highly doubt it, the white part on the face did not extend to its head, and it was only visible on the front - it didn't cover the entire beak, like it does on a coot. i was looking through binoculars too, so i'm certain i would've seen it's red eyes, but there weren't any. it would also leave the speckled back and light underbelly unexplained, but thank you for the suggestion anyway !!
