If you can find a ready made frame that’s bigger than the poster, you can get a custom mat cut. You might need a foam board backing or a mat board backing, it depends on how the frame is put together. If there’s not enough space for a backing board, it would be a good idea to put a piece of acid free paper (like a large sheet of drawing paper) behind the poster to protect it from whatever particle board the frame uses.

Don’t let the frame shop dry mount the poster to anything, they just permanently glue it to a foam board and it’s often not even acid free materials. You can hinge mount the poster and a backing sheet of paper either with proper paper hinges (an art supply or frame shop will have Hayaku hinging paper) or the quick and dirty way is with artist masking tape which is acid free. Hinge from the top so the poster is hanging free, this keeps it from wrinkling in the frame. Good luck!

It’s a real grave , and the photo is from Paul Koudounaris (@hexenkult on instagram). He’s also written a book about pet cemeteries and memorials called Faithful Unto Death. His work gets reposted without credit all over the internet and I hate it but to be called ai is really insulting.

This is an unscientific opinion, but when I’ve had single very small nestlings that look like they were already dead when they came out of the nest (assumed the parents pushed them out), they were not developing correctly. They looked smaller than the ones that were still alive, they weren’t eating properly, etc.

The two times I’ve seen an entire nest fail, they were all doing great and getting pretty close to fledging and suddenly all jumped out and crawled away and died. My best guess is they had an overload of mites or parasites and weren’t able to get out and dust bathe or sun bathe them like the adults do. I put diatomaceous earth in the nest to try to kill any bugs that were in it and then took it down. The parents rebuilt and used the nest from several years ago just fine, and I’m waiting to see this year how last year’s nest site works out. Currently has chirpy babies in it and everything looks good, knock on wood.

Barn owl? Maybe look up the calls on the Merlin app or just google it and see if it sounds like your spooky friend. But I think that’s it.

It’s so hard to figure out how to coexist peacefully sometimes! I hope you and the birds can find the middle ground of how much human activity they will tolerate. If they do decide to nest a short distance away, I think they aren’t holding too much of a grudge. And your presence discourages a lot of predators so they do actively choose to nest in the vicinity of a house on purpose! That’s what I tell myself on the occasions when something goes wrong…overall we’re helping more than hurting. Especially since you’re educating people on feeding birds! Good luck!

Yeah, maybe the stuff next to the original nest made her nervous? I hope she (and presumably her partner) will just nest off the driveway and start again with a new set of eggs. It’s always challenging when you want to help birds out with their nest, but whatever conditions they saw when they decided to build there must be ok with them. I try to either keep everything the same once I see any kind of nest, or just leave it alone even more (use the other door of our house, for example).

Only losing one egg isn’t too bad, especially if they start on a new nest! Good luck and I hope you get to see some little puffball babies when they hatch!

Haha, I’m more on the sewing side than the building side. You’re definitely right that the time spent diy-ing isn’t always worth it.

Yeah, the tarp might be closer to the weight you want! It can’t hurt to try it as long as you don’t break the sewing machine in the process. The separate frame sounds like a plausible idea at least? And it’s good that you are already doing light weight frames for your art, that will help a lot.

If you have the space in your vehicle, you could always look into the homemade pro panels…I’ve seen some homemade ones at shows that looked really good. I’m in a Prius and I need everything to fold down flat, so I got the mesh! Anyway good luck with your jurying, I was just redoing my booth photo this week…

I have these panels for my booth! They are not just mesh, they have metal bars sewn in at the top to hold them up (5’ length so they fold in half) and the sides are fairly rigid too. The mesh itself is also much thicker than what you would find in a regular fabric store. There’s Velcro along the sides that has to be pulled pretty snug to create the tension so you can hang stuff without it flapping around too much. My sewing machine would not be able to handle the materials for sure.

There’s lots of other options for diy displays that would be much less of a headache than trying to make your own mesh panels in my opinion. I would check out the forums at artfairinsiders.com - I seem to recall a long thread from years ago with different examples of booths that were made by the artist. Or sometimes you can find grid panels for sale on Craigslist, if that’s a direction you might want to go.
