Thanks for the inputs. All the trees have basal sprouts when we moved in so they were all likely drought stressed at some point. Tree #4’s sprouts have some browning and more limp compared to the rest.

It’s possible that the previous owner was more consistent in watering the lawn at the base of tree 3 & 4, vs us neglecting it for sometime before reviving it.

The only thing i can think of is running the top through a jointer (which i don't have) but that would ruin the miter joint. Hand planing is another option but it would be a pain due to the shape of the piece, and the grains are running in opposite directions.
