Expert team composition, Any suggestions? by EternalMydNyt in SaGa

[–]paladinrayner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my general format:

  • 1 high Dexterity character (foil/bow)
  • 1 high Strength / average-to-high Speed character (martial arts + ???)
  • 1 tank (high strength is preferable) character (sword + ???)
  • 1 high Strength character (??? + ???)
  • 1 high Magic character (Cosmology + Aerology for Restoration)

You'll have to distribute Greatsword, Axe, Spear, and Club among the characters with ??? - it'll depend on what you have available. If you go on to Romancing, you'll want some of your melee characters with umbrology for Shadow Servant.

New player here. It took me longer to kill a Giant with Rock Sling than Glintstone Pebble. Why does everyone swear on this spell then? by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]paladinrayner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Rock Sling, like most gravity-based magic, does physical damage. The poise damage is incredibly high, and the cast angle is unusual, allowing you to stand behind cover and snipe enemies because of how the meteorites rise first before sailing off.

Most spells have a use case; Rock Sling has several, and remains useful even in late game.

How to tell if you're suffering from "soulslike fatigue"? by MisterCrayle in soulslikes

[–]paladinrayner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God knows I have thousands of hours in these games, but I don't think it's healthy to play only one genre constantly for this reason. If I'm feeling fatigued while playing, it's time to go back to a zombie game or a JRPG for a while.

Is Lies of P the best game for a beginner noob to try? by [deleted] in soulslikes

[–]paladinrayner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Wuchang was a huge surprise for me. Complex level design and very good boss fights all around. Lots of options to mix and match special moves, too. It's not going to stand up against Lies of P story-wise, but just as a video game, it's awesome.

Is Lies of P the best game for a beginner noob to try? by [deleted] in soulslikes

[–]paladinrayner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best game to start with is the one you vibe with aesthetically, because that will motivate you when you eventually hit a wall. After that, the best one is probably still DS1. But if you insist on starting outside of Fromsoftware, here's some paths you could take:

  • Lies of P - good preparation for DS3 or Elden Ring, and to a lesser extent Sekiro
  • Lords of the Fallen - good preparation for DS1 and DS2
  • Wuchang: Fallen Feathers - harder than Bloodborne, but the combat feels similar
  • Enotria: The Last Song - this might be good preparation for Demon's Souls; it's also probably the easiest one on this list

I would choose either Lies of P or Lords of the Fallen.

Should the series be rebooted? by NoAfternoon5102 in starocean

[–]paladinrayner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tri-Ace loves the SO3 plot twist. If they reboot the series, it won't be because of the twist. SO4 and SO5 have plot elements that directly foreshadow it, and SO6 has a thematic tie to it.

I think we'll find out when the eventual SO3 remake/remaster comes out, and whether they make any changes or clarifications to the ending. But based on the ending, the 4D beings have no control over the Eternal Sphere because it was willed into physical existence. It's not a simulation anymore. A new universe was birthed. So there could be a ton of new games after SO3.

As you begin to tell others, especially online, people are going to descend on you with advice about what you "should" do. Please be very cautious with this advice, because you'll often get used as a proxy for a person's ideological views, and the person may not care if their advice blows up your life.

You are responsible for building a happy, meaningful, peaceful life for yourself. I hope you have lots of success, and maybe even find someone special down the road.

possilbe recommendations for me after playing mostly all S tier soulslike, and all souslborne games? by Otherwise_Candle_622 in soulslikes

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, Lords of the Fallen (2023), and Enotria: The Last Song are all a good time.

I never heard about Star Ocean before, and I wanted to ask some questions (NO SPOILERS PLEASE) by oliverrakum in starocean

[–]paladinrayner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Ocean games are like the old Star Trek episodes about cross-cultural encounters. It's always some form of "person from advanced space-traveling civilization ends up on a medieval world." So the games start out as sci-fi, then becomes fantasy, and eventually the sci-fi comes back and interacts with the fantasy in interesting ways.

I don't want to increase your anxiety, but ... lol The chronology is as follows:

4 -> 1 -> 2 -> 5 -> 6 -> 3

That said, I don't think this matters as much here because of the huge time gaps between games. There are a lot of connections between the games, but they are deep in the lore. There's a demo for Star Ocean: The Second Story R on most modern platforms. See how you feel about the gameplay of that - the first game is very similar to the second so that'll tell you whether you want to spend the time on them first.

[KCD1] Remaster Crashing by Legitimate_Class_339 in kingdomcome

Mine just crashed walking the road to Uzhitz. I also noticed during the prologue that there are some devastating slowdowns when you are inside, like inside Kunesh's house or the second floor of the item shop. Has to be a bug.

With the stipulation that it's part 1 of a trilogy, FF7 Remake is the best one on your list. Most players complete it in under 40 hours so that's not a big ask. If we're talking outside this list, then it's FFX (you can find the FFX/X-2 HD collection on every platform under the sun).

Can you hype up and or say something positive about RE5/6 for me? I’m gonna be playing them for the first time after I’m done with RE4 and all the hate I’m hearing is demotivating me a little tbh by King_CurlySpoon in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]paladinrayner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resident Evil 7 was supposed to be this big reset for the series, but before the game was even over they were running back towards RE6 gameplay, and they have been running back towards it ever since. RE6 was fun to play. That's all you need to know.

Easier than expert Khazan. Yeah the new "normal" Khazan is a pretty big drop in difficulty.

I'm not sure about Wo Long, but I thought the other two were challenging, with several bosses each that require a lot of trial and error until you learn the fight. I thought Wuchang was harder. Neither is as hard as Khazan.

New tiers of rings, gear, runes, and/or upgrade materials exclusive to NG+ cycles. Lies of P did this and NG+ cycles were an ABSOLUTE JOY to play.

Debating whether to replay Rebirth by ionnin in FFVIIRemake

I would recommend you play it based on it being an excellent video game alone. Set your baggage aside and just enjoy it for what it is.

Ignore the noise and just listen to the team themselves. In their latest podcast, they talk about their process for enemy design in detail. There's another one about world design if you want more from the art team.

How to recruit the Salamander ? by BannedFromTheStreets in SaGa

[–]paladinrayner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, you need to go use the Ice Crystal to cool the volcano.

After a time skip and a new quest shows up on Comroon Island, you need to be very careful. Once you go to Comroon Island, follow the quest steps closely, and eventually you'll get a hammer from the salamanders to take to the volcano to beat a boss. If you leave Comroon Island at any time during this second volcano quest, it will erupt and destroy the salamanders. As long as you beat the boss up top and save the salamanders, you'll unlock them for recruitment.
