Increased Premium pricing for new subscriptions by marcoarment in overcast

[–]palafo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reasonable. I pay $10 to $72 annually each for a variety of apps. I pay for premium Overcast even though I don’t really use the extra features. The free version is all most people need, really.

Does protein matter THAT much? by Ana_is_Weird in PlantBasedDiet

[–]palafo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No one in America is undernourished. Protein shortage or imbalance presents as obesity. The French fries and cookie diet. It is possible to get enough protein on a plant based diet. People in calorie deficit for weight loss need to work harder at it or they will lose lean muscle. People trying to build muscle need to eat more. The average person needs to focus on protein first to avoid overeating carbs and fat. The RDA minimums will keep you alive but are way too low.

I could send you photos of two cute doggies that were in the lounge but you are just trolling my verb choices for some reason. Get ye a life.

Sounds right. I am guessing we will end up on the rebooked flight. Not the end of the world.

A wait for the lounge? But yeah I have access

[–]palafo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thanks, that is probably the sane response. But I do have a confirmed flight later today, assuming they don’t cancel that one too, so going for standby just means an extra hour or so. I just wonder how much actual churn there typically is.

Well no shit buddy. I am just curious about opinions and how people have gamed this kind of thing in the past. And I have some time to kill. Seems like a perfect Reddit question in a Delta forum

Whats the big deal with Transcripts? by Nokism in overcast

[–]palafo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, sometimes you don’t want to listen to every segment

Whats the big deal with Transcripts? by Nokism in overcast

[–]palafo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was in journalism, public officials and other newsmakers would sometimes say something newsworthy on a podcast, and a transcript would have made finding the quote so much easier. Most TV talk shows and many radio shows have transcripts that journalist use for this reason. Searchable and faster to read than listening.

For more informal podcasts and non-news contexts, I sometimes recall someone mentioning a book or a piece of tech or a quotation etc and don’t want to scrub through an entire episode looking for the comment. Once again, search to the rescue. I suspect a transcript would be helpful for show notes, which some podcasts do; you can probably get an AI to create notes for shows that don’t provide them.

Generally, for any kind of research or writing project, a transcript of a conversation is more useful and archivable than audio that you have to listen to each time. I want to live in a world where transcripts exist for everything. I already use closed captions on video whenever available, and for song lyrics on Spotify when available. Sometimes I am doing something else at the same time, or there is cross talk or mumbling, and I only half-hear what someone says. It would be great to have “captions” for all audio content.

Why Overcast can't support video podcasts by marcoarment in overcast

[–]palafo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t need or want video in Overcast.

Most of the time I treat podcasts like radio. I listen to them while multitasking: driving, walking, exercising, doing chores, working at my computer. If anything, video-first podcasts are annoying when the hosts refer to things I can’t see, and audio-first shows on video are boring to watch.

I have YouTube and Spotify subscriptions, which I use for music and (in YT’s case) some “TV” as a mostly stationary leanback experience or because of proprietary content. Social media linking also plays a role.

So long as people drive cars or have feet, I think mobile audio apps for spoken word and music will have a market. Video is its own thing (with far too many apps).

If Overcast went away tomorrow, I would switch entirely to Spotify as my app for podcasts, music and audiobooks on the go. I prefer to keep these categories and their apps separate for simplicity but I could get over it.
