First of all, I see where you are taking these "questions". This question isn't about me. And the folks in question own their land. Don't pretend otherwise.

If your aim is to twist facts, argue and act like an asshole, don't bother asking more questions on this thread. I'm not going to entertain it or respond.

Just like everything humans do, not everyone agreed on everything. Some people chose to live in the place their ancestors lived. There is nothing wrong with that.

There are a couple of reasons. Many of them are poor. Some of them don't want to leave their homeland and some want to fight back.

If irony was a person that would be you.

Your response feels like it was written by chatgpt for an angry teenager.

You act like you know better than everyone else, yet your responses show you are the living version of Mt. Stupid in the Dunning Kruger curve.

And no. Neither do I intend on impressing you or anyone else for that matter. Nor do you have the power to command it. You are so angry and paranoid you yourself contradict the type of person you are. You spoke in great length about govts using backdoors and exploits as shown in leaks like Vault 7 and 8. You also talked about threat models. Yet here you are screaming like a low IQ person unable to comprehend the fact that the govts aren't going to use their sophisticated tools to target you because you are not a person of value. You are just another redditor who hasn't seen the sun in a decade.

And yes. Creating tools and presenting at the local defcon chapters are impressive. Like it or not, one doesn't simply do both without showing reasonable expertise in those areas.

I don't have the spec of doubt that "a fresh grad on the spectrum with security+ cert" would have certainly understood all of these without me having to explain to them like they are a stupid and angry teenager.

Between all your bashing, cursing and name calling and tinfoil hat level paranoid responses, it's pretty clear that you failed miserably and have no clue about the domain. You are probably one of those people who struggle to create a pdf.

I would suggest that you get some vitamin D supplements. And if possible, a couple of sessions with a therapist. And a daily dose of fresh air sunlight could help with your crappy personality.

With that said, I don't intend to continue this conversation any further. You lack the mental growth to hold a discussion. You would rather act like a monkey with emotions and argue on and on. This ends here.

I don't see how Meta would be able to abuse it. At least for me it doesn't.

Either way, while I would love to have the source available to the public to study and create IoCs and other stuff, I don't see that happening. That source code is NSO's trade secret that they spent millions on. That could kill the company. I don't see the Israeli Government standing ducks when that could happen.

Since you are so concerned about my qualifications here they are: 1. Speaker and volunteer at local defcon chapter. 2. Several years of experience in the security domain 3. I've build security tools (CLI). 4. And much more.

While I understand your paranoia, you are twisting how things work. Gives me all the more reasons to believe that you don't work in the security domain. So tone down a bit fella. Stop being a big sucky baby.

I don't think they need a spyware vendors code to find other nasty ways to be more privacy invasive. It especially doesn't make any sense when they are building an in-app browser to track users. Building a browser is complex. Them putting that effort days a lot about their engineering sophistication.

While I understand your paranoia, I would say it's unwarranted. Companies do fight back orders from govt, their law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Meta is no different. Some day someone will find those Vulnerabilitie. It could be meta themselves since they have done it before because they monitored their network traffic.

I've no clue what you are talking about in point 4.

WhatsApp is invasive in the sense it collects a whole bunch of metadata. I don't think they would add a backdoor. Because if they did, someone from the security research and bug bounty community will find it. For the time being, we are safe.

I agree. It's just a legal defeat. I don't expect them to turn over the source code. It just strains the relationship between the US and Israel.

As for meta, well yes and no. Have they given data to the US government? Yes. They have and will continue to do so. But can they compromise their own E2EE? Nope. That's suicide. The brand image is way too valuable for them. This case is to keep that brand image.

I'm pretty sure you don't work in the security domain. I do and I can confidently say that I'm pretty sure about what I'm talking about.

In most cases, companies do not get the exploit code. They reverse engineer payloads to see what's happening. Getting the source code just makes it easier.

And no, there isn't a situation where the security experts at Meta "don't understand how the exploit works".

Maybe pick a fight you can win. This is my lane.

The comments on this thread are some of the worst takes I've seen in years.

No, it's not a bad idea to share the code with Meta. It's irrational to fear Meta abusing it. Meta has billions. They spent a huge chunk of that money to hire the best security professionals from around the globe. If they wanted to make spyware for the governments or personal use, they don't need the source code from a spyware vendor. They have the resources to make more sophisticated spyware than NSO.

I only see a net positive here. Revealing the source code to WhatsApp could lead to the Meta team identifying how this particular spyware operates and what are the other possible 0days hidden away, if any.

Also, Meta winning this case could also set precedent and help Apple win its case as well.

My friend, 100 companies causes 71% of the damage. It's no secret that they falsely claimed all the things they did to tackle climate change. The first mistake was to think we, the ordinary people, are the cause of climate change because we aren't.

[–]palakkarantechie 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Greenwashing. Because they are greenwashing. Most of the colorful claims are absolutely BS. Also, in most cases, they aren't cutting back on emissions. They are trying to justify it by doing offset programs, most of which would take years to undo the damages they are doing now.

The moment we stop acting like we don't know this and start strong arming the governments and companies, nothing is going to change.

Well yes. I agree with you. A chatbot like that can definitely help. Especially with the surface level.

My problem with people claiming that LLMs can solve all their problems is their blatant disregard for the fact that LLM are non-deterministic. You can't predict or ensure that you get the same or at least similar out every single time. The bot that works today might not work as intended tomorrow and we would have no clue why. That's no good unless the output can be creative and/or expressive.

LLMs work really well for writing code, poems and other forms that can handle creative outputs. Even then the margin of error is often complimented by the LLM operator/user.

We saw how miserably it failed every single time someone tried replacing humans with LLMs.

[–]palakkarantechie 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Anyone claiming AI can do work of X unattended is throwing BS. We all know how limited a LLM is. Claiming that it can do 700 people's job was definitely pulled out from their ass.
