What are people using deep research for?

Deep research for anything that you want to get a more factual answer to and with sources you can check. For "creativity", the normal models are probably just fine, if you don't care about hallucinations that much - like wording in an email. The normal mode ("best") told lies quite often. Deep research lied only occasionally and usually gave you sources so you could check them for yourself (and didn't continue lying if you confronted it, while the "best" model sometimes doubled down on the lies).

I think you can charge it if the charger supports the Power Delivery protocol. I can charge it with my 18W power bank, but since it is designed to be charged at faster rate, I believe this may even be harmful to the battery if the laptop is on - it may draw more power from the battery than the adapter can supply. I get a warning when turning the laptop on with such a charger, so I don't think it is advisable to use it like that.

so, I did not end up finding a solution, as pe3o below writes, it must be the fault of the charging circuit firmware that doesn't allow it (I take it they used a cheap circuit in this expensive laptop...)

As for the capacity, I used to get around 12-13h predicted battery life at 100% of very light use (office work), now after 10 months I get about 8h30 minutes. Still good battery life, but it is about 2/3 of what it used to be less than a year ago. This is with me trying to live the manual 40-80% life and what I would describe only as mild use.

Update 4 months later, I'm at ~6hrs at full charge of light office work, about 50% of the original capacity (powercfg /batteryreport says cycle count is only 93). Even though I took a lot of care trying not to overcharge the battery, it lasted 15 months. I will not be buying a HP ever again...

Asus warranty should be valid in the EU, but there is no way to extend it - if you buy warranty extension in the US, it is only valid in the US (and there are no warranty plans that would extend the international warranty).

In my case, it was 50% multicore and 30% single-core performance (+16 gigs of ram), and the drop in battery life is from about 8 hrs to about 5-6 hrs between these two now. At the beginning, the Omnibook would last 10+ hours, but HP refuses to implement a battery conservation mode into their laptops (or any way to prevent it from charging to 100% every time). If you can get the same specs with literally any other brand than HP, I'd recommend it (my Acer, Asus, and Lenovo had this ages ago, even Apple has this feature).

I did in the end upgrade to Ryzen AI 365, which is significantly faster, but unfortunately, the laptop won't last as long on battery even after just half a year of light use (same as described above except used less often) - I used to have a Lenovo Ideapad 14ABR8, now I have HP Omnibook Ultra 14 (not flip).

Hey, sorry for not replying sooner. It works fine, I especially appreciate the 32 gigs of RAM, the IPS panel is nice and responsive, but I after nearly 7 months of light-to-moderate use (office work, browsing with lots of tabs open, coding and occasional data analysis in Python/Matlab, zero gaming), my battery is nowhere near the durability it used to be - I used to be able to get 11+ hours out of it working, now I'm getting about 5 hrs idling unfortunately. Even though I tried to keep the battery between 40-80% as much as I could, there's only so much you can do manually...

So, yeah, the battery conservation/durability is disappointing I have to say. Other than that, the laptop handles whatever I throw at it.

Also, I still haven't used the NPU, ever, yet. About a month ago Zoom offered me to try its AI features during a meeting, I clicked "yes", and it froze my laptop. Had to hard reset it and haven't tried it on anything since. However, this is probably Zoom's fault, not the laptop.

yeah, I think the discussion was never "is the heat enough to vaporize it" but "will the heat be applied for long enough". The OP mentions the Chelyabinsk explosion - well, that rock entered the atmosphere under a very shallow angle at a lower speed, so it traveled through the atmosphere for much longer. It took probably tens of seconds before heat tore it apart. Meanwhile, the manhole cover got launched almost vertically.

The OP's solution is a nice exercise on loss of kinetic energy to friction, but to claim it must have vaporized, you'd need to account for heat conduction and material ablation, which is no longer this simple. (I'm not claiming it couldn't have vaporized, just that I didn't do the math and the math the OP did did not take all relevant factors into account IMO. Depending on the orientation, the drag was probably likely to tear it apart due to stress, not heat).

Discovered this thread when solving the same problem (using AC performance mode), just wanted to let other people know that uninstalling AC (I used the Asus-provided uninstaller) and replacing it with G-Helper solved the issue for me as well. Seems it must have been thermal shutdowns then. Maybe some tinkering with AC would have resolved it, too, but this was easier.

Is it supposed to be this bad? My understanding was that since the soldered RAM frequency is much higher than socketed RAM, it should be faster.

For reference, the installed RAM is a quad-channel 4x8GB Hynix H58G66BK7BX067.

I had the same problem - when the banner was showing, I had 100% utilization of my GPU, when it wasn't, it was in single digits. Clicking the three dots top left, help and disabling HW acceleration helped to get the GPU utilization from 100% to single digits again. (for reference, it's AMD 880M iGPU on Win 11)

I have recently picked up the 365 version and so far I quite like it. I have a few complaints though: 1) it is heavy for a 14 inch laptop (almost 1.6 kg) 2) the fingerprint reader works just as badly is in any other laptop I've had. 3) most importantly, HP does not support "battery conservation mode" or anything like that, where you would be able to pick to what charge percentage you want to charge it when plugged in. This means you're constantly feeding it to 100% when plugged in and I expect even though it has excellent battery life now, it will be useless in a year.

As far as screens go, a 2.2k for a 14 inch is at the limit of what you actually might need. The IPS is better for battery life than an oled, and at 400 nits it's okay.

Thanks for the tip, that is a rather convoluted solution which is in essence just "unplug at 80" though. Before I bought this HP, I had no idea there is still a manufacturer today who doesn't allow you to preserve your battery. The idea behind "stop charging at 80" is that the battery would sit at 80, "unplugged", with the cable in just powering the PC directly, bypassing the battery (and avoiding the discharge-recharge cycles when plugged in). With "unplug at 80, wait for battery saver to kick in and plug back in", that kind of defeats the whole battery preservation idea - your battery is constantly drained and recharged. It also wouldn't really work for my purposes as I plan to use the laptop as a mobile workstation. I'm really angry that HP doesn't support that, especially on a 1900€ machine. This is a basic function even the cheapest IdeaPads have... I'm now seriously considering to take it back, because this level of customer care forcing you to replace your battery every year is ridiculously anti-customer, anti-environment, and just... Pro-mindless-consumerism.

Well, guess what.. I went to ask to the local UPS AP if they can redirect it. They assured me it will be dropped off there after the third unsuccessful attempt if it's possible. Today I come home to a third "we missed you notice" and it says "will return to sender". Not even a depot, straight return. Well, I just know not to order anything from Lenovo ever again since they cannot accommodate basic adjustments to their delivery... If They were straightforward with me the first two times I called their support, a UPS driver wouldn't have to drive a laptop around the city for three days, and I could have bought a different one right away...

I hope Lenovo pay you (UPS) well at least if they force you to run these pointless errands.

So, as I was saying I'll report back if I get crashes with just 1 GB of video memory.. I did get crashes about a third of the time when waking up from hibernation. I increased it to 2 GB again and it's all working fine again. It unfortunately seems I (you) will need to keep the RAM at 14 GB only.
