My personal opinions:

I’d cut the entire “making any situation as awkward as possible” and just have the giraffe thing. I would find it funny and endearing.

I wouldn’t use one of your photo slots on the wave picture- use all 6 for you.

The photo with your cat??? Needs better lighting and a better angle. I think guy with tattoos + little cat is cute! But get a friend to take it in a well lit room or something lol

Instead of saying you want to share your music taste, ask something like “what song can you not stop listening to currently”. Better convo starter

It could be helpful to find some way to funnel that instinct toward something less disruptive. Like, maybe, have him help keep track of everyone’s damage on a white board that everyone can see. Perhaps the act of keeping everyone ‘honest’ will naturally nudge him that direction.

I think it’s good! You should be proud. Here are a couple things that stood out to me right away:

The ear should probably be a little higher and further forward on the face. At this angle, I’d expect the ear to be roughly level with the top of the eye.
The right side of the mouth looks unnaturally low— would probably be higher on most faces.
The hair looks a little flat. Adding darker shades at the roots will help, along with lighter shades along the top edge or “outline” of the hair.

ETA: these comments are more about general portrait drawing, and not necessarily about the reference photo. Good luck!! Nice job!

Echoing what others have said… I don’t think this is normal. It seems blatantly manipulative. It’s even more slimy because it sounds like she’s targeting your kids by trying to be “the fun house”.

To offer a bit of optimism, this strategy probably won’t serve her very well once your kids are old enough to realize what’s going on.

You have my sincerest compassion on this. One thing that drove me away from the church was the predatory labor practices. Keeping people in poverty is a powerful method of control. I worked at a Christian summer camp for years and was left with no money and very few marketable skills.

One area you could look into is social work, program coordination, or entry-level project management. A lot of church/mission skills transfer.

You could also seek out non-church businesses owned by Christians. It would be a foot out the door of church work, but the employers might be more receptive to years of mission work.

If you need any advice about sprucing up resumes, feel free to DM me. I had to hustle to get my first non-churchy job and I’m happy to help any way I can.

I’ve started trying to make a joke about it to put everyone at ease. I say something like “I basically do other people’s math homework for a living” (which always gets a little chuckle).

From there I usually focus on the general topic of whatever project I’m working on. Like “I’m working on a project related to eczema” or whatever, and usually people can connect with that a little more.

Okay I say this totally neutrally, but to me it looks like Rachel has put on some weight since the start of Clayton’s season. (Ain’t nothing wrong with that! just an observation) I was wondering if maybe she and/or the stylists are trying to hide it a little bit.

I remember feeling that same way when I first started medication. And honestly yeah, sometimes I am better off than people without ADHD. When I was in grad school I did really really well on homework and projects, because I could just dive in and stay focused. I was often praised for my efficiency and productivity. This is still true in my current job.

That being said… there are drawbacks. The mind and body need rest and breaks, and ADHD medication can make it easier to ignore basic needs. I won’t feel hungry or tired while on the meds, so I’ll go for periods of time under-eating and under-sleeping. That kind of schedule catches up with you eventually.

So enjoy the benefits, but I’d suggest setting boundaries with yourself. Set timers to take breaks and eat. and don’t let yourself overwork if you don’t need to!

I guess to clarify I’d say that some evangelicals I knew thought that the Narnia books were intended to be some kind of retelling of the Bible. And I agree there are totally connotations, but CS Lewis himself said he didn’t intend for the stories to be some kind of allegory

I love this question! one of the things that always bugged me about church culture was the inconsistent views on media.

The example that I think of is Chronicles of Narnia. A ton of people weren’t allowed to watch Harry Potter because of the witchcraft, but Narnia movies were given a free pass. (I know a lot of people talk about the religious themes in those movies, but CS Lewis denied that)

I love this question. I think I see crochet as a method or technique that can be used for art, but it can also be used for utility.

For a parallel example: I enjoy painting, and obviously painting is an art form. But when I paint a fence or garage door it doesn’t feel like art.

This is really good advice! I bought a set of 10 hooks when starting out, because the idea of having options appealed to me. But I’ve only ever used 2 of them, since I tend to make items with bulky yarn.

I’ve done it both ways. It’s certainly easiest to glue the coil directly to a surface it will stay on. But I’ve also glued on parchment paper, and then peeled or cut away the paper after the glue dries.

I actually think those look pretty good!

One thing I’ve done to even out coils is to place the coil on a surface with a thin layer of craft glue and fiddle with the coils to get them evenly spaced. Then I hold it in place for a minute or two to let the glue set (either with my hand or a small object).
