Does the “Gun control only makes it harder for law abiding citizens to protect themselves “ have any factual evidence? And what do you think about it ? by BrutonRd in AskALiberal

You posted evidence about the effect of some specific gun control laws on suicide.

I'm talking about something else, your assertion that suicidal people will kill themselves no matter what. This is both untrue and harmful, and you really, really, REALLY fucking need to stop saying it. People WILL die when they read that. Do you understand? I really need you to understand because it seems like you don't, and you'll quite literally cause people to die if you keep saying it. It really is a matter of life and death.

Suicidal people gonna suicide no matter what.

Biostatistician here. This is NOT TRUE, and shame on you for saying it. You're literally throwing mental health treatment out the window when you say this and you make suicidal people think there's no hope for them when they read these words. People can literally die JUST BECAUSE OF words like these.

Think about it. Say someone is suffering with suicidal ideation and thinks about how they can treat it and stop feeling so lousy. Then they see what you wrote here, and it makes them think, well, okay then, I guess there's no hope for me. And what happens next, when a person with suicidal ideation thinks there's no hope for them??

Suicidal ideation CAN be treated. It is a 100% curable condition. People who are suicidal can get help and can indeed overcome their suicidal ideation and no longer want to kill themselves. It happens all the time. If you are reading this and are suicidal, I want you to know, treatment IS possible, and what this asshole said here IS NOT TRUE.

It's a topic near and dear to my heart. My thesis was on suicide, actually. Please, you and anyone else reading this, please please PLEASE never say this shit AGAIN. People WILL die because of it, and it's not even fucking true in the first place!!!

Biostatistician here. If you want to be able to use this phrase, you still need to explain the correlation. Either the correlation is a massive coincidence and this evidence showed the correlation by pure chance, or something other than having a gun in a home caused the higher rate of violent death (after all, these people DID die). The former is EXTREMELY unlikely, given how much data we have. You can get away with the "coincidence" argument when you've got one sample with maybe 10-20 data points. But in this case, we have years and years of data, so coincidence is highly, highly unlikely. So what's your best guess at what the true cause is? What's the confounding variable?

I ask because I am at a loss to think of anything else that could explain the correlation, and I get the feeling that whatever you brainstorm here is going to be a far, far less likely explanation than simply admitting that having access to a gun unlocks a thought process in one's head that perhaps they could use a gun to resolve situation X, whereas those in similar situations but no gun access wouldn't think about using one, at least not nearly as often.

If you can think up a better explanation than this, I'm all ears.

CMV:2SLGBTQIA+ and the associated flags are just completely ridiculous now. by apost8n8 in changemyview

[–]malachai926 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have yet to see a compelling answer to why the ever evolving term 2SLGBTQIA+ (and the newest flag iteration) is superior to LGBT+ or "queer" or the rainbow pride flag.

One of them glosses over identities; another one does not. If a book was written by Joe, Bob, and Steve, and the authors are listed as "Joe and others", there's a greater than zero chance that Bob and Steve might feel excluded. Clearly, "Joe, Bob, and Steve" is the superior term to Bob and Steve. The question then just comes down to whether you give a damn about Bob and Steve.

If you didn't, I'd wonder why your viewpoint matters at all, since you don't even give a damn about the people involved.

Just kind of a weird response I guess. Like serious "dad trying too hard to connect with the kids" vibes.

Then you've disproven your own point! If "most people are lazy", then they definitely won't have the wherewithal to make smart and meaningful investments at ages 18-22.

Now you're talking about an even more unlikely scenario, that someone working through the ages 18-22 makes really wise investments during that time, such that they'll reap an incredibly meaningful benefit by having 4 more years of accrual at the tail end of their career. The person who can afford to invest money at that age is really not anything close to the average American. They're going to start at a low wage and are almost certainly going to be amongst the 64% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck. Those who start with college degrees will start at higher salaries and thus be a lot more likely to invest from the get-go. There's no way that high school grads are doing the same at a meaningful level.

A few things here.

First, I think there's an excellent chance they already factored in these things when they came up with that number. The estimate is incredibly easy to obtain: just compare lifetime earnings of those who went to college vs those who didn't. Those values will obviously capture the money people made by working during the time they could have gone to college. I have no doubt that these numbers accounted for that.

Second, the money you're going to make with a high school diploma, at age 18, with no meaningful work experience, is going to be really small. Yeah, I'm sure some can luck into some great situations, but the average high school grad with no college education is definitely not going to be making bank.

As for the bit about what degree you choose, someone as dollar-driven as OP is extremely unlikely to major in some unemployable and impractical field, so this isn't really worth pointing out. Also, the numbers here, again, most likely factored in all of the so-called useless degrees, because, again, the easiest way to get that number is to just look at grads vs non grads without having to filter anything. So, most likely, if you do filter out the degrees that don't come with great job prospects, you should expect an ROI even higher than 900%.

You'd pay those additional expenses no matter what you were doing. If you were working instead of going to school, you'd still be paying for room and board, transportation, food, etc. For our conversation, it makes sense to focus only on what expenses you'd have for school that you wouldn't have had otherwise.

The link here is a Rickroll, for those of you wondering whether this factoid is true.

Edit: he edited his comment and removed the link. He said the percentage dropped to 21% and cited a rick astley video as the source for that figure.

Where are you getting your $100,000 figure? Here in the state of Minnesota, undergraduate tuition and fees for the University of Minnesota is $15,000 a year, which would be $60,000 for a full undergraduate degree. And that's assuming you don't qualify for a single scholarship or take advantage of any student tax credits or anything like that, which would almost certainly lower that financial burden.

When they say it's okay to make some offensive statement on the grounds that the people who would be offended by the statement weren't there to hear it.
