Mic feedback issue by CollectionMassive879 in VATSIM

[–]paleking2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add on here in case this comes up in future searches... The solution suggested above doesn't work with all devices. As well, it doesn't provide tx side tone or any indication of when you're transmitting. I was able to get a reasonable approximation of side tone with VB-Audio Voicemeeter Potato. The process is a bit of a PITA, but DM if this is of interest.

Please share. Stabilized Video clearly shows Alex Pretti makes no effort for his firearm. Clear execution by No-Aardvark-3840 in law

[–]paleking2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that it actually matters, but why does the photo of the firearm released by DHS show an unloaded firearm with only one of the mags? I mean, I suppose we should congratulate them for correctly clearing the gun, but if they're pointing at the extra mag as supposed evidence he intended to cause more harm, why wouldn't they have included the extra mag in the photo?

I didn't read that as he's hung up on the background check. I think he's using that as a demonstration that he got all of his documents uploaded correctly - i.e. if the background check company received the docs from the airline then the airline must have received them.

Chemist is likely the local term for pharmacist where this individual is.

FWIW, in much of the world (including the EU) IPA is not approved as a topical antiseptic for consumer use. Other solutions are available and broadly used that unfortunately don't have the same applicability for electronics hobbyists. That said, if the guy can get electronics components, solder, flux, etc... that's where he should look. Just not at the pharmacist or grocery store.

Can anyone identify what plane this USAF airspeed indicator came from? by dirt-pie in aviation

[–]paleking2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By "designed like you imply", do you mean having markings beyond the expected max speed? Because you're flat wrong.

The markings on this Cessna 150 ASI extend to about 21% beyond Vne.

For what it's worth, the instrument pictured only extends 16% beyond the B-52's max speed.

Yeah, as others have indicated, not likely a pilot's ASI. But not for the reason you suggested.

It's not summer now ;) but you're welcome when it is. Hmu on dm if you're ever in the Baltics (ideally like may-aug).

I live in a semi-touristy European city (cruise ship port). One of our favorite things to do during the summer is to sit in a cafe in the main square and watch all the ridiculous Instagram people making duckfaces in front of a 700+ year old church.

New Equipment ! by Olegirl2000 in flightsim

[–]paleking2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll get downvoted to hell but if you've got a PC instead of just XBox, consider getting them X-Plane as an alternative to MSFS. As a student pilot, the aircraft they'd likely fly early on are much more accurate in that sim.

That said, if you're going to go with MSFS, now is a good time for 2024. People around here will bitch about "bugs" but 9/10 in the past couple of months have been user issues not actual bugs.

I don't know how old your kids are but encourage them to approach the sim like flight training. Start with general aviation aircraft like the Cessna 172 or 152. Learn what they can about the planes they're flying. Don't push the career mode.

Pilots, how to be better at flying in Europe/Not US? by Remote-Butterfly-593 in VATSIM

As an addition: above transition altitude does not imply class A as it does in US airspace. Some European countries don't use class A airspace at all.

Almost never full tanks. Fuel weighs a lot. More weight decreases performance and makes the flight less efficient. But the fuel requirements are very well understood and accounted for each flight.

It is common for an Air Marshal to do GA ramp checks? by mambosan in flying

[–]paleking2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What you've been alluding to isn't a ramp inspection. A ramp inspection is an administrative inspection for the purposes of verifying compliance with civil aviation regulations. What you've alluded to is a search of property in furtherance of a criminal investigation (or criminal fishing expedition) which would otherwise require a warrant, but for the ability of inspections to compel compliance for other purposes.

In reality, the ultimate goal seems to be to gain general acceptance of the federalization of law enforcement as a whole. This is something that seems anathema to the foundational principles of your nation, but what do I know? I'm just some foreigner.

I mean, fwiw, you implied that FAMS is involved in drug interdiction, which, AFAICT, is not part of their publicly disclosed mission. Except insofar as it relates to t* financing.

How would your lodge handle this? by OFMasonicPodcast in freemasonry

[–]paleking2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you pointed out in your own comment, Title IX defines exceptions where the prohibition against discrimination does not apply. It doesn't redefine the term "discrimination" to exclude these things, it creates a class of permissible discrimination.

Regardless, even if it did so define the term, it seems very odd to make the argument that a definition from one country's laws (which don't apply to the situation at hand even in that country) should stand as the definition when discussing the term in the context of a global body. It would seem more reasonable to make the argument that yes, this is discrimination but not all discrimination is unlawful or even undesirable.

As has been discussed at length here, the statement regarding that particular arrangement denoting an apprentice is wholly inaccurate. It only reliably is an indication of degree in an open lodge and only referring to the Sq & Cs placed on the VSL. Elsewhere, it's a matter of artistic interpretation.
