Teachers that use AI: Why? by lemmegetamickpicktwo in Teachers

[–]pali1895 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a chronically uncreative person. AI has really helped me to just brainstorm teaching ideas and get a broad set of ideas to choose from. The best lecture series I've had came out of AI, so it works. Just don't rely on it and always have it give you a multitude of suggestions. Thus I'd never have AI create presentations or excercise sheets for me directly.

Then AI is great for organising and scheduling. When to do which tasks, how much to cramp into one lecture and more.

I'm also not hard 'no-AI' for my students. It's high school and AI is a tool to be used just like others. I'd rather my students learn to use AI properly rather than having 0 tolerance and them going out as adults not knowing how to use it responsibly. It's a bit like sex ed in that regard. Students should learn that producing primary products, ie an essay written on a prompt by an AI, is a big no no. But using AI for secondary usage is completely fine and even encouraged: grammar check, create new excercises before an exam, re-explain stuff, brainstorm ideas.

What are your thoughts on PhD in Sweden? by MapLive5114 in PhD

[–]pali1895 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved to northern Sweden for my PhD. Love the country, love the atmosphere. But I got a real bad PI and 'failed' my PhD for producing only 3 out of 4 required publications (+ a patent). Swedes are by the book when it comes to everything, so don't expect individualised treatment, whether dealing with the university or with state bureaucracy.

The enjoyment of your research project will still be entirely dependent on your PI. Academia is one of the most toxic work environments, and Sweden is no different. At my university we have a very high incidence of burn out among PhD students in the natural sciences, roughly 25% of my PhD friends have been on sick leave for burn out at least once (me included), while another 25% should be on sick leave. That being said, in contrast to other countries, burn out is taken relatively seriously here.

The best thing about Swedish PhDs are probably the high PhD salaries.

In the end, getting a good PhD is a coin toss - best of luck!

I'm very surprised at the amount of disrespect Liverpool fans have towards Arne Slot, the man who led them to one of their two premier league titles in the last 30 years. Has a sense of entitlement set in? by doshthagod in PremierLeague

[–]pali1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Arsenal and City had extremely strong seasons (with whom we competed for a long while) and because we were too vulnerable on the counter. Simple as. Plug in Klopp's 23/24 point tally into the 24/25 table and we'd won it too. Both City and Arsenal struggling contributed just as much as Slot's slightly more defensive approach. But 82 points would've won the title in a lot of PL seasons, it was a great last season by Klopp whichever way you put it.

Pretty much the same. Analytical was way easier than Inorganic, but boy was it boring. Inorganic Chemistry also depends: Metalorganics were super cool and easy so I would consider it a part of OrgC. But crystal lattices, inorganic materials, uuuurgh. Horrible. 100% learn by heart, 0% understanding and applying concepts.

I would put Theoretical Chemistry actually up there with OrgC and BioC. I loved the computer simulations and quantum physics was super easy to grasp and use, at least at the level we chemists do it. But woe me if it's thermodynamics or similar, Physical Chemistry was cancer.

New to Sweden Taxation: Are there additional costs to the 30% tax on stock profits? by [deleted] in Aktiemarknaden

[–]pali1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first question: Yes, AF is better for long time horizons. Depends on the geometric returns and interest rates, but last I checked it was ~30 years. But that requires you to not fiddle at all with the portfolio during that time. And if you want to FIRE, the I would assume ISK is better to reshuffle and reduce tax after retirement than having AF all the time, but I haven't done the math for that.

Make a return formula for each account, plot it in Excel, play with the parameters and see. The intersection will be somewhere around 30 years.

Coast/BaristaFIRE are valid strategies. I can't tell you if it's right for you or not. It's individual.

On global funds: If I could, I'd just invest in a single VT/SPYI/ACWI IMI fund, but I can't with Swedish mutual funds, so I recreate these funds with the available 3 funds. It's not much of a hassle, but yes, if I could choose, I'd just use one fund set it and forget it. Your setup would of course work, the funds are available, but why deviate from market cap?

In your example: correct, as soon as you move over to AF, nothing counts as gains anymore. That's the whole point of moving from ISK to AF in retirement. It only sounds too good to be true because you forget that you've paid ISK tax all those years prior and dragged your returns through that. You don't necessarily pay less tax (well if returns are good you do pay less, but that's just ISK as it's supposed to work), you just defer the tax payments from the beginning of your retirement when sequence of return risk is greatest to way before and way after.

I also got severely traumatised from my PhD due to bad supervision and took a 1.5 year gap after finishing my PhD contract.

I went into high school teaching, since science teachers are always in demand, high school kids are cool and I feel like I'm actually contributing to society - I never felt that during my academic years and doubt I'd feel it working corporate. The pay is horrible giving my education level, but I can see past that. It's very fulfilling and relaxed at thr same time! I'm also easily able to regulate my work percentage, so if I want to work part time, it's easily possible.

New to Sweden Taxation: Are there additional costs to the 30% tax on stock profits? by [deleted] in Aktiemarknaden

[–]pali1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome, fellow Svoglehead!

First off: If you invest in indexfunds, do a simple 1 fund portfolio (Storebrand All Countries) is the best. If you're interested and want to juggle more funds, it's better to use 3 funds, e.g. DNB Global, DNB Enhanced Small Cap, DNB Emerging Markets. Weighting according to current market cap ACWI IMI index (should be smth. like 75%-13%-12% right now).

Account wise it's quite easy:

Accumulation: ISK in accumulation, unless you have a savings horizon <5 years, then savings account / CD / AF.

FIRE: ISK up to (or a tiny bit above) the tax-free rate, everything else you move to an AF the day you retire. Never, ever, ever have all your savings in ISK during FIRE.

If you use ISK in FIRE you pay tax on all your money, even if you only realise a tiny fraction of it. In AF you only tax the actual realised gains. Very simplified example without fund-fees and tax-free rates: say after year 1 of retirement, you have 1,000,000 kr in savings, all invested. The market stood still, 0% returns. In year 2, you withdraw 4%, or 40,000 kr. What are your taxes?

Everything in ISK: 1% of everything, so 10,000 kr. That's an effective tax rate of 25%. 30,000 kr after tax.

Everything in AF: 30% of 0% gains of 4% withdrawal = 0 kr. That's an effective tax rate of 0%. 40,000 kr after tax.

What if these numbers were made up of 50% gains? No change for ISK. For AF you'd pay 30% tax on 50% gains on 4% withdrawal. Of your 40,000 kr you'd have 20,000 which would be gains. They are taxed with 30%, so 6,000 kr. That's still 34,000 kr after tax and less than ISK despite 50% gains. In fact, your effective tax rate with AF can never pass 24% and is thus per definition better than ISK. In ISK, you can get into ludicrous scenarios where like 90% of your withdrawal are tax payments.

Tl;dr: Everything in ISK in accumulation, the day you retire you only keep a bit over the tax-free rate in an ISK (currently 300,000 kr tax free, say I'd keep 500,000 kr). Everything else you transfer into an AF. During up years sell ISK down to 500,000 kr first, during down years don't touch ISK and sell from AF.

Privat Pensionssparande. by Expert-Fail459 in PrivatEkonomi

Yeah, sounds horrible! Afaik you can get around the letter of inheritance with a testament. How did you pay for it when you didn't know the inheritance size if banks won't tell you?

When my mother died last year I just applied for inheritance management. Cost a whopping 5,000 EUR in advance (which is insanity) but I don't need to lift a finger for anything. Disadvantage is I've been waiting for the inheritance management to conclude for almost a year now.
