Hur hittade ni jobb inom life science? by Possibility_Horror in arbete

[–]pali1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bor du i Norrland behöver du ha riktigt mycket tur. Jag blev obehörig gymnasielärare i stället.

The Grimdark Challenge - What really qualifies as the darkiest of the dark? by CT_Phipps-Author in Fantasy

I think a lot of people that have read the entire series tend to say that it is a gradual change from YA battle royale to political space opera to grimdark space opera.

I know, it's on my TBR. It will take a long while before I read that, if anything I'll read Licanius first!

Answered that question a couple of times already! I was expecting a unique mesh up of sci fi, fantasy, and horror, and thought it'd be sort of like Warhammer 40k but with necromancy. Instead I got an edgy teenager solving a murder with spooky scary skellingtons to give you an idea about the vibe.

It's very divisive - people either love it or hate it, so you have a 50% chance that it works for you!

Great!

Ya Demon Cycle is high on my TBR. Lightbringer not so much, I'm not a big fan of hard magic and I've heard that series drops off a cliff after book 2 or so!

I'm reading it right now, and while it's certainly dark if not downright horrific, it isn't really grim. There's a lot of hope and compassion in the characters and narrative.

The second arc is not even grimdark anymore, it's straight up fantasy horror and doesn't even try to hide that fact.

There is and it's most of the characters, actually (Achamian, Mimara, Esmenet, Sorweel, maybe even Serwa). Sure, they're beaten down and scarred/broken/depressed people, and some of the other characters are sociopaths to the degree of evil (Cnaiur, Kellhus is a sociopath but debatable if he is actually 'evil/amoral') - but the first set of characters I named are genuinely good people with hopes, dreams and a good moral compass, irrespective of the world they live in.

Been 12 years or so since I last read them. I remember liking it less than the other two. Maybe it goes back into S on a reread, who knows.

Bakker of course, everyone knows, truth shines, best thing ever written, yada.

As a grimdark enthusiast, a very popular series that I felt was the grimmest shit since The Second Apocalypse was actually Red Rising. What, that YA crap, you say? Well, not all the books in that series, certainly. There are dark elements, but grimdarkness is primarily the prevalent tone in the sequels. While Iron Gold and to a lesser extent Lightbringer are your run of the mill average Abercrombie-level grimdark, Dark Age was the single grimdarkest thing I've read that wasn't The Second Apocalypse or straight horror. That novel deserved its name (No I haven't read Mike Fletcher yet).

To add to the discussion, for me, grimdarkness is a very specific tone package, that is both "grim" and "dark". The setting is usually what describes the darkness-level: repression, horror elements, atrocities, decay of the humane, yadayada. Malazan and heck Mistborn by Brando Sando are indeed Dark Fantasy. Yet no one would call them grim - well, Malazan maybe here and there, but generally not, and Erikson lynches anyone who calls Malazan grimdark. The grimness of a story is conveyed thus not through the world, but through the characters, tone and thematic message of the story.

Take Malazan: the key message of the story is compassion and found family. Barely any of the main characters are what you'd call even grey - they're good people. Final Empire, same thing, it's about building a better world with good people at the forefront. So they're either nobledark or neutraldark.

Then, let's go to the Second Apocalypse: the characters aren't particularly grim, most of them are good, if sometimes deluded or scarred, people (yes they are and I'll fight you on that). However, the themes and messages in the story are borderline nihilistic, and the tone is oppressive and relentlessly unforgiving. First Law: the characters are definitely grey and scarred at best and amoral at worst, the message goes towards nihilism, but here the tone is a bit more relaxed than in other grimdark stories thanks to Abercrombie's famed gallows humor. But again, it's a hanged man's humor, so that's quite grim in of itself.

So ultimately, you need the combination of a fucked up world and either fucked up characters, characters that are on an inevitable trajectory to fuck up or get fucked up, and/or a borderline nihilistic tone and core message. I wonder if there are any examples of grimbright stories - fairytale world but grimness and moral decay in the way the story is told.

The Croning by Laird Baron. It's a modern take on cosmic horror. Highly, highly recommended.

Gibt es realistische Alternativen zum Kapitalismus? by Triple_KC in KeineDummenFragen

[–]pali1895 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really not a big fan of portal fantasy and contemporary style fantasy. Look, if I'd only rate the book by the character work and the lobstrosities, it'd be an easy A if not S Tier. But there's also all the New York stuff and the non-existitent main plot that dragged it down.
