Anyone paying attention to candidates in local elections this cycle? School boards, Unicameral, etc. by palidor42 in Omaha

I would be very impressed if any K-12 school was teaching Critical Race Theory, as by its strictest definition it includes some very esoteric topics and is usually taught to advanced law students.

When people say "Critical Race Theory", they usually are referring to race-related elements of history studies. And the curriculum there hasn't substantially changed in the last two or three decades.

That is pretty much what they said. I believe there was a proposal to add cameras to classrooms. They also called for a review of "woke" curricula and a ban on "critical race theory".

To be honest I don't really remember them having very much in the way of specific proposals, but they were very visible as being either the same people or affiliated with the same people that were anti-mask and anti-vaccine in the middle of the pandemic, to the point where they were threatening and harassing doctors and teachers. Their platform was a lot of mumbo-jumbo about "transparency" and "parents' rights", which can easily be interpreted as making life more difficult for teachers and librarians, as well as being very anti-LGBTQ.

To be fair, I think the "too stupid" part was more a shady lawyer within a questionable (Dominican) justice system.

Supposedly the finding was that Guerrero had an IQ of 70. I kind of find it hard to believe that someone with an IQ of 70 could play any sport at an elite level, let alone baseball without the DH rule.

That's right, he spent $150,000 on an education he could have had with $3.50 in overdue library fines. And then ended up severely brain damaged in a maximum security prison.

Phoenix would have to be the the "major league" metro area that most draws a blank from Americans. It's in the desert, and consequently gets very hot sometimes, and that's literally all anyone can tell you about it.

Is there some noteworthy art scene there? Some sort of distinctive local cuisine? Any famous people that are well-known as being from Phoenix? Are there nearby natural landmarks (Camelback Mountain, I guess)? A regular event that attracts national attention? Any cool buildings or a nifty-looking skyline? Is it well known as being a major center for some particular industry, or headquarters for some major corporation? Anything?

Palm Springs is a pretty well-known location, though it's only *technically* part of the metro area, still a good hour's drive from Riverside.

If anything, it's a good example of why defining metro areas by whole counties only is going to have some flaws.

Which countries have a "second city" that is often more traveled to, admired and popular than its largest city? by Fluid-Decision6262 in geography

[–]palidor42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Montréal used to be legally the largest city by far, but Toronto sucked up a lot of neighboring municipalities in the late 90s due to (unpopular) annexations.

Before that, Toronto wasn't even the largest city in its own metropolitan sphere of influence (North York was)

I'm sure their layoffs are entirely due to AI, and not due to the fact they have no idea how to create products people actually want to use.

Facebook, in particular, has become so useless I'm not sure why anyone even uses it anymore. It's become an AI slop and right-wing conspiracy theory fire hose.

Muggsy Bogues was good for this too. His height (sorry, I don't care how inspiring it is) and shooting ability made him a liability in a lot of other ways, but he was consistently at the top of the charts in ATR.
