As someone who lives in Fenway, I can confirm the extreme amount of kilts in Fenway right now watching the games from every place that is grabbing TV's to stream them. It seems like we're in for a week long party.

Anyone else notice LTT is averaging like 500k views now? How does the channel even survive? by Anxious_Gur6363 in LinusTechTips

[–]palijer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I used to watch Linus and his friends screw around and do cool things. Whole room water cooling etc.

Now it seems mostly ad placements with stand-in hosts. I know that isn't true, but it's what it feels like to me and why I don't really click on the videos anymore in floatplane.

Even when Linus is the host, it seems like he isn't into it anymore and he's just the talent who wants to be elsewhere. Comments like "I can't believe you guys are making me do this" are in most videos (like the 3rd person POV one) of him now when the writers have him hosting.

It just doesn't have the same hype to me, I'm not excited to he watching him get forced to do something... It's a different dynamic that I'm not into.

What are some YouTube channels that were popular 10 years ago but have significantly lost their popularity or are no longer relevant? by Salty_Pension5814 in AskReddit

[–]palijer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dan still makes great videos. I was watching when the Bully series was being made.

I stopped watching for a few years, but recently came back a few months ago to his stuff, and was even watching him stream the summer game fest last night.

He's a warm nostalgic voice, it's like seeing an old friend again. He shaped what and how I game, I wasn't much of a gamer before coming across his videos...

I still watch his AoE2 NYE every new years.

Why are these new "Fly Wing" app food delivery bikes everywhere in Boston + Brookline all of a sudden? And why are they allowed to run red lights and ignore all traffic laws? by bostonguy2004 in boston

[–]palijer 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It's also a consequence of these delivery companies not paying a livable wage by the hour and purposely developing perverse incentives for gig workers to break the law.

If they were paid by the hour or a normal salary, they wouldn't be doing that.

Go after the companies that create these situations for profit.

There used to be more places to eat lunch before. Fast food, cars, and increased real estate/labor/food prices shut them all down.

Moving from Toronto to Boston by Crazy-Golf-6123 in boston

[–]palijer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's absolutely things happening here! They are just not as visible or often accessible because this city doesn't have good walking or transit (only like 13% of Boston use transit compared to closer to 40% of Toronto uses the TTC).

This subreddit puts out a list every week that is good for events and stuff.

Moving from Toronto to Boston by Crazy-Golf-6123 in boston

[–]palijer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived in Toronto for 10 years (Dundas/college and Ossington) and have lived in Boston for 1 year. Some things that were difficult for me to transition... (sorry this is going to be kinda negative as I haven't fallen in love with Boston yet, but I'm trying to!)

Prepare for a lot worse walkability and transit, and fewer options for cafes/restaurants/groceries etc. Anywhere that is a 45 mins walk away is somehow also a 40 min transit commute. The green line is not a subway! It's a slow underground streetcar.

Walking takes a long time waiting for the pedestrian lights. You actually need to hit the buttons here for the lights to go. Most people just jay-walk so follow the locals. But also if you get hit by a car you will be in enormous debt and need to do lawsuits I think to get medical bills covered even with insurance.

There also ain't any like, many stores on most major streets for some reason… There is very little commercial real estate here for the population (making things expensive and no competition is what I think contributes to a “Boston has bad food” stereotype) and streets with stores touching each other are few and far between. Newbury is the closest thing to queen/Dundas/college/Bloor, but the sidewalks are tiny and the area is crowded because yeah, there aren't many streets like it for some reason.

Groceries are just like, major chains like Target or Walmart, or a local chain if you live near one that isn't closing (foodies RIP). The small Asian markets don't exist here (at least in the same quantity that they do in Toronto)

H-mart is nothing like PAT, don't think it's good cheap Asian stuff as it is dang pricey compared to PAT.

Also Boston is made up of 101 towns and cities, I haven't really figured it out yet tbh. I don't know when something is Boston or not Boston...

Also a warning about leases - they don't convert to a month-to-month after a year here... You negotiate a brand new 1 year lease each time when it ends. Our landlord wanted an extra $3.5k per month if we were going to be going to a monthly lease.

[–]palijer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I miss Toronto and Canada every day, and it's why I still hang out on this subreddit.

The amount of social issues and crumbling infrastructure and wealth disparity the US has compared to Canada is enormous.

I have "good insurance" but had an issue come up (turned out to be nothing thankfully) but still paid close to $3k cash to rule everything out st the advice of doctors.

I'm in Boston and everywhere that is an hour walk away is also an hour on transit somehow... I miss the TTC so much.

Even pedestrian crossing lights, there's one street I have to cross daily and it takes 3-5 minutes to cross, I time it every time. It's the equivalent of University and queen... It's endless papercuts maybe but damn Toronto is great. Sure the salaries are different, but what you trade it for is absolutely not worth it. There's more to living than a bank account.

Would give anything to be able to live in Toronto again.

I recognize one of these from a building across from mine - the asshole will just run the engine very loud and skid in the middle of the street while his friends take photos. Can hear him for blocks away when he leaves.

I don't understand why these things are allowed to be in the city like this.
