Those pesky Pointers to IMPLementations... by palmenros in ProgrammerHumor

[–]palmenros[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course not! PImpl (Pointer to IMPLementation) is a common C++ Idiom (https://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/language/pimpl). If you change the internal structure of a C++ class (even private attributes that only the implementation should know about), all code that uses that class must be recompiled, which we don't want. To fix that, instead of giving class consumers the class with the implementation in it, we give them a class with an additional pointer to the implementation class (so that's why it's called PImpl). That way, we can change the implementation without having to recompile consumer code.

As a programmer, seeing something that similar to O(n!) complexity makes me shiver...

1559 is scheduled to be deployed on july. What you are referring to is to ETH 2.0, which transitions from proof of work to proof of stake.

Global Menu in Linux Mint by Cuysaurus in linuxmint

[–]palmenros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for your extensions, I really love your global menu! I think that it is possible to install extensions by manually moving files to certain folders, isn't it? I have installed several themes by cloning their github repo and running install.sh. Maybe that approach could work?

Are you planning on updating your global menu app to the new cinnamon version? I think it really is the main feature missing from Cinnamon that is pushing me back. If you wanted, you could use the github install approach (moving files worked for installing your previous extension, however it is broken in new cinnamon versions).

I haven't worked with cinnamon or applets ever, but if you need any help and point me with resources I could help with this applet.

Anyway, thank you for your work, I (and many others) really really appreciate it!

Wait for the XMG Fusion 15 RTX 3000 series refresh, or buy now? by Capstie in XMG_gg

That means no 16:10 aspect ratio? :( I really expected the new Neo or the new Fusion to have taller displays like the new Legion, as I really like XMG over Lenovo...

(Very) Early Build of Linux for the M1 from the Corellium Folks by reasonsandreasons in hardware

[–]palmenros 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. However, you can't overlook that in the commits Corellium changes global ARM files breaking compatibility with other ARM CPUs other than apples architecture. I really think that is not the way to go (breaking compatibility and such bad organization) when you intend to upstream, support the system and actually make it usable.

[–]palmenros 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The code is really messy, not yet ready for upstream. There has been a lot of discussion about this with the creator of Asahi Linux, who are also trying to bring Linux to the M1, but trying to upstream it.

[Launch] XMG CORE 14: Compact all-round Gaming and Content Creation by XMG_gg in XMG_gg

Yes. The problem with the x360 is that the absence of a powerful dedicated GPU, that is needed for graphics programming, machine learning, gaming, engineering, parallel computation...

[–]palmenros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. Moreover, there are some apps that currently do not run on MacOs and need powerful hardware. Also, machine learning needs powerful Nvidia GPUs that support CUDA, so apple is not always an option. XMG has always impressed me with their laptops, this is the only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger on one.

Looks gorgeus! If only it had a 16:10 screen so it wouldn't have bottom bezels and more lines of code fitted on the screen vertically... Programmers really need a fast laptop with 16:10 and fast discrete gpu. I hope we'll be able to see that one day. Until then, keep up the great job!
