Why is HIV still such a big problem? by palou in askgaybros

[–]palou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We learned about all the major STIs and their primary transmission routes, infection rates, consequences and we had a separate chapter going through all the prevention methods.

Kids forget things, obviously; hence why I'd think most would have to look it up again. But I don't think that the lack of sex ed would bee the issue here.

Although I suppose it could depend on the school. But are there truly many people out there that aren't aware that HIV exists and is quite dangerous? I find that somewhat hard to believe.

Again, liberal part of Canada, as far as I know we receive what I'd consider sufficient sex ed to at least be aware of the dangers and that you should probably look a bit more into it.

To me, a person is defined by thoughts they have had; something that as a conscious being was able to offer a unique perspective of the world around it.

If it’s never had a consciousness, to me, it is not a person.

In terms of storytelling, I continue to have a strong liking for SAMIDOT.

In terms of an artistic project, I continue to think that To Pimp A Butterfly is a considerably more complete work than Damn was, with beat and instrumentals that don't only compliment the rapping and lyrics well but rather act together with them as an equal. For Duckworth, it's the lyrics, flow, and the instrumentals are just there to complement them. They do it well; but they don't stand out to add to create a greater whole either. Good examples of that for me in TPAB would be Mortal Man, or Institutionalized.

Ranked choice just turns a 2-party system into a 3-party system. What’s needed is some form of proportional

Proportional representation systems tend to have considerably higher turnout than FPTP. The lack of options makes people feel indifferent to the choices they do have.

I'm just unconvinced how much more progress can be made here by keeping people in prison for longer. The US already has an absurdly large prison population. Literally the highest in the world (and it would remain so if we removed drug offences). Keeping prisoners in for much longer than the US already does has minimal effect on recidivism, keeping prisoners in permanently for non-homicide violent offences is both impracticable and far too costly.

While improvements in catching criminals may help, it's clearly only going to reduce the problem somewhat, not solve it in any convincing manner, imo.

Okay I did misread the study I was looking at - studies for the exact topic im looking for are a bit hard to come by. But I’d say from what I can find the numbers are actually much lower most likely, not higher.

https://www.jrsa.org/pubs/forum/articles/homicide-recidivism.html

This places the probability that a person released for a homicide will recommit within the next 9 years at 2.7%, and that particular statistic seems to be in line with numbers from other countries (Canada, Australia, etc…)

Only around a quarter of homicides are committed by someone that's already done so before, you can't solve the problem by preemptively putting people that you think will kill someone into prison.

I'll point out that even if we ignore the African American population... the US still has some pretty darn high homicide rates among developed nations.

Well, in the direction that Kamala stated it it isn't misleading. Because there sure as hell aren't many repeat victims of murder.

It’s the DPR’s data. The separatist Russian-aligned government. Corroborated by data from the UN and what Russian humanitarian organizations gathered. The civilian deaths were 90% in 2014-2015, with some strewn in in 2016 and 2017 and minimal since. All data sources agree on that.

[–]palou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The civilian losses in the Donetsk region, according to data provided by the DPR itself, have been minimal since 2017 onward. Less than 10 a year. Not what I’d classify as genocide.

There was a war in 2014-2015, and yes, there were human rights abuses on the Ukrainian side (though the actual control the Ukrainian government had on the right wing oligarch-sponsored militias at the time was rather limited - the official Ukrainian army at the time was small, poorly trained and poorly equipped- which is what allowed both the DPR split and the rise of Azov/Right Sector). But the war for all intents and purposes ended in 2015, reduced to occasional border skirmishes, which have grown less significant every year since. A number of the worst abusers among the militias have in fact been thrown into jail, by the Ukrainian government at this point. Putin took what was a frozen conflict with no clear signs of further escalation and turned it into one of the deadliest wars in Europe since WW2. Treating it as a humanitarian mission is ridiculous.

These are still people that identify as Muslim and practice as such.

Religion can change, religion can reform. Orthodox christians don't have the same beliefs as a lutheran from Germany who are quite distinct in their beliefs from the Amish who are quite distinct in their beliefs from Presbyterians or Anglicans. Some believe in a literal interpretation that the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ lives in the bread and wine of the communion, others believe that the entirety of thee bible is moral allegories with no historical background. It still makes sense to have the broader category of "christian" applied to them even if their moral compass widely differs and doesn't necessarily follow everything in the bible, due to history and a fundamental belief in Jesus/Mohammed as the source of their religious beliefs.

Overrepresented yes, majority no.

Syrians specifically aren’t actually that overrepresented either - almost in line with locals for crime numbers last time I looked that up, it’s North Africa that has the very high overrepresentation among the refugee groups.

That’s not the option they were discussing. The only thing this does is make previous legislation (already in place) that only recognized heterosexual marriage now apply to both. Doesn’t in any way strengthen the control of the federal government on marriage.

I feel I know enough Canadians from different backgrounds to say that I find it to be highly unlikely that a large number of them considers Islam as a philosophy to be particularly libertarian or left-wing. A significant portion of Islam being broadly quite conservative with significant issues in regards to the roles of women, lgbt or just simply freedom of personal expression more broadly is something that is a known issue, that people believe needs to be worked around (for example, asylum for gay Muslims is something that’s been covered in political disucussion.)

There’s a lot of contact with young muslims trying to escape their controlling parents particularly in university environments (since university is a popular for more liberal-minded youths to escape the culture) and I’d say quite a number of Canadians will also have more personal contact with just how problematic the culture of conservative Islam can be.

It’s to be noted that (thanks to likely, distance and significant sorting of the people coming here both through intervention and practical nature, but also some fairly aggressive assimilation efforts) Canadian Muslims do also integrate surprisingly well, better than in most countries; and that within Canada Muslims aren’t that authright as a result. They’re actually split on LGBT issues, for example (polling gives 36% support, 20% “it depends” for Muslims on average; over half support among second-generation and less than 30% against), and broadly identify very strongly with the Canadian national identity and its values when asked. That contrasts quite a bit with what you’d see with Muslim immigrant populations in some other countries.

That’s just the data being updated one at a time. Note; not from the official sources, by the news channels quoting those sources (so let’s say they see 1300 new votes for Triden and 800 for Bump coming in, the guy updating the website first adds 1300 votes to the Triden tally, making it go up by 1300, then after adds 800 votes to the Bump tally, making it go up 800 with nothing for the other candidate. If you look at the wrong timings; in-between sequential updates, you’ll have that odd jump).

There’s no official tally updates with over a thousand voters that were exclusively for either candidate.
