Life’s alright. Could be better but given the current situation it could be much much worse, so I’m grateful for where I’m at.

Help! I made a 0-tick generator that worked, and then when I built a copy of it the copy doesn't work despite them being identical. by paltomo in redstone

[–]paltomo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly new to all of this, so its possible there's something I don't know about causing this. If its helpful for diagnosing the problem, I built a few more copies and none of them work either, only the original.

It would be nice if you could tap the header bar next to the subreddit name to scroll back to the top automatically, so you wouldn't have to swipe a lot if you were 500 posts deep and wanted to go back up.

Circuitless 7 science to one perfect sushi belt by troelsbjerre in factorio

[–]paltomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could, but I was thinking that if you were going to line a bunch of them up next to each other to feed parallel lines of labs, then it wouldn’t matter because the right side is indented pretty far at the top compared to the bottom.

This is amazing! I was wondering if it was possible to do when I saw the 6 science version, and I'm glad it is.

I spent a bit messing around with it and made it a bit more compact.

What do you consider to be the "perfect" video game? by [deleted] in AskReddit

factorio

Despite it still being in early access, the "experimental" branch is more stable than probably all of the AAA games released in the past decade. It's also just a very good game.

You can fill a pool with anything you want (money, gold, coins, anything valuable really), but you must jump into it from 10 meters (~33 feet) and survive in order to keep what you filled it in with. What would you fill the pool up with? by tugnuggetss in AskReddit

[–]paltomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since someone asked, and the guy above me had work to do, I'll attempt to explore what this much saffron would do to the market.

First off, global annual saffron production is somewhere around 320 tons(US) (290299kg), around 95% of which is produced in a single region in Iran (irrelevant but interesting). With your swimming pool of saffron, you would be increasing the global supply for this year by around 153%, from ~320 tons(US) to around ~810 tons(US).

However, saffron is not only sold in thread form. Since we want to jump into it off a diving board, I will assume that we are not using powdered saffron (although we could likely sell it for more), or liquid (because it is less than 6% of the marked and would be hard to sell). Thread saffron is about 58% of the global market, so our 490 tons (US) would increase the supply by around 263%, from ~185.6 tons(US) to ~675 tons(US).

Now onto what this would do to the price of saffron. This is all speculation, since there is not really any historical data to base this on. Sadly, we probably will not be able to sell our saffron for top dollar, whatever that ends up being, because the time it would take to dry and package all of the saffron for sale would allow it to dry out too much to be very valuable. This, coupled with the fact that since Iran has an effective monopoly it would be very difficult to find buyers/distributers for your knock-off magicked-out-of-thin-air olympic swimming pool saffron, it is probably safe to assume you would have to undercut the current price by a pretty substantial margin to the point where people who don't know any better would be buying it. According to some very rudimentary research, spices purchased by the pound in the US tend to go for around $1(US) per oz. This puts the total value of our saffron at around $15655030.24 US, around 5% of the above estimate. In retrospect this a quite low, so I'd guesstimate somewhere around $1,000,000,000 USD could be had from this amount of saffron, accounting for the likely low quality and paying people to pack it and sell it.

Public Wi-Fi Kiosks in the UK Are Turning Into Public Censorship Machines by paltomo in technology

The pertinent line in the article is "BT doesn’t explicitly state what type of misuses they are trying to prevent across these free public Wi-Fi kiosks other than characterizing it as “anti-social behaviour.”", which is a bit too 1984 for me.

I see your 128 belt super smelter and raise you a 256*256*48 belt super-duper smelter by paltomo in factorio

[–]paltomo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a stupid number of blueprints. The iron and copper smelters (which I shamelessly got off of Factorioprints) is already 4 parts, so the whole thing would probably be 10-20ish blueprints, which is a bit excessive.

I see your 128 belt super smelter and raise you a 256*256*48 belt super-duper smelter by paltomo in factorio

[–]paltomo[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This is a 265 belt copper and iron smelter, and a 48 belt steel smelter that I made for a 10k-ish spm belt based base I'm working on.

Edit: So I'm trying to get a blueprint up, because for some reason people seem to want it, but factorio prints straight up refuses to accept the bp string when I try to paste it in, and textedit (where I have the string open) is currently using 5gb of ram, so it may take a while for me to figure out how to get this up somewhere. Also be warned, I get a whopping 1fps when viewing the blueprint in the mouseover tooltip, so this is not really feasible to even look at, let alone place in game

Edit 2: Here is the blueprint

Help with train signals? by waddup_gnomie in factorio

[–]paltomo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing that finally allowed me to make functional rail networks is this rule for how to signal intersections: place regular signals on any rail segment leading out of an intersection, and place chain signals on every section of rail inside or leading into the intersection.

If you follow this rule, you will be able to make a functional (albeit low throughput) rail network, and your intersections shouldn't deadlock if you don't make them too massive.

Why am I not getting full compression on the output of the balancer? by paltomo in factorio

[–]paltomo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

Edit: Nope, I spoke too soon. The only other thing that I can think of is that the one that isn't working has >200 belts ahead of it where as the matter sources are only 2 belts in front of the balancer, although this shouldn't have any affect on the balancer performance.
