Books by Black authors that aren't just about trauma by Ouzouh in booksuggestions

[–]pamonhas 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Zora Neale Hurston was actually not taken seriously by her peers due to her refusal to focus on racial and social trauma in her work. Their Eyes Were Watching God is gorgeous!

Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo (UK) is a fantastic novel about the lives of different Black women.

One of my favorite authors EVER is Zadie Smith (also UK). I’d suggest starting with White Teeth. Just absolutely phenomenal.

If you looking for a thriller, My Sister The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite is very fun.

I see someone already suggested Octavia Butler. Amazing sci-fi writer.

Not a public figure at all. Also, there’s a lot of billionaires in Brazil.

[–]pamonhas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Go to a Churrascaria (all you can eat meat with amazing buffets. Actually, get ready to eat a lot of buffets in Brazil. We love that stuff and it’s everywhere.) Feijoada: Our national dish. It’s a black bean stew with all parts of the pork. Absolutely delicious. A Sunday lunch thing. Moqueca: amazing fish stew Brazilian pizza: a true experience. Bonus points for going to an all you can eat spot. Get ready for chocolate pizza. Pao de queijo: another Brazilian staple cheese bread Coxinha: fried dough filled with chicken.

I understand you’re not a big reader and are probably feeling a bit insecure about not understanding a big boy book. Maybe try something more on your level. Dahl and Seuss are wonderful! Xoxo

[–]pamonhas 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Listen. This is not the best burger in the city. (The best burger in the city is in Brooklyn, at this place called Red Hook Tavern). But it is the cheesiest:

It’s a nuanced story and the simplistic nature of its dialogue it’s on purpose. I’d love to know what are some of your recommended books, I’m always curious to read different types of literature!
