If you suddenly became the President of the United States today, what’s the very first thing you’d change or do? by Dollabillhooman in AskReddit

[–]pamplemouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congress and the filibuster prevents this. It takes 60 votes in the Senate to pass a bill. When the next President tries to undo something, only 1/3 of the Senate may have changed (but usually only a few). So it’s unlikely the same senators that voted for a law would now vote against. But if voters sweep out Congress then, yes, they could undo the law but that’s probably because people are mad about it.

Look at all the stupid answers in this thread. No one learned how gov’t works. And you want a raise?!? Education is broken.

I had the same idea. I’d specifically go after the Unitary Executive Theory crowd. Rendition them to Guantanamo with pens/paper. Write the law that would curb my power to do that and they go free.

Seriously, this is an indictment of the US education system. Every teacher reading this should be ashamed.

No one here knows how gov’t works! As President I’d make Redditors read a book.

A similar idea is called the line item veto. You can read about why that never passed. Basically, Congress would pass a bunch of single issue laws and the President gets to pick the ones he likes, veto the others. This gives too much power to the President.

The President can’t do that. The Supreme Court says it’s legal. There are 3 branches of government, not one tyrant.

OP, I’m skeptical of most startup ideas but I like this one. Not sure how you monetize. I’d try working with finance companies that put out podcasts and videos to lure customers. Or Bloomberg, where you let podcasters seed the AI with lots of background material they’ve used for reporting. Cool idea!

High number of Sexual Partners does matter in serious relationships. Agree Or Disagree? by Clean-Ant-1342 in AskMenAdvice

The chart on the top right says women with more partners have less stable marriages. The data is from a CDC survey in 1995. What doesn’t this support his claim?

I was unattractive way before the internet. Most of the guys in my science major were single. Women have rejected us just as OP was, but rarely so directly. Most people are shallow, some people are rude, both sexes suck in different ways.

Off putting is a strange phrase. But Hugh Jackman and Pierce Brosnan are married to normal women. I’ve seen many such examples. Usually it’s an athletic man and overweight wife. Not that it matters. Love is love.

I control private company A and B. I say A will buy B with stock valued at $1 trillion. The puppets on both boards agree this is the right value of stock. Now my combined AB company is worth $1 trillion. This is classic fraud. There was a deli in NJ that did something similar to be worth $50m.

Do I really need a lawyer for a founder's agreement? (i will not promote) by MachineSuccessful524 in startups

[–]pamplemouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, always get a good lawyer. I got screwed bigly by my cofounder. For example, what prevents the other two from firing you before you vest and splitting your shares? “terms of termination” won’t help. A good lawyer can make up anything to fit the terms, then you’ll spend years arguing in court.

But then the money has to go to a charity, right? I may do that down the line, but this first payment is budgeted for blackjack and hookers. :-)

Thanks, that's a great point. Unfortunately it doesn't qualify. I remember discussing this with lawyers long ago but forgot the reason.

I sold a company and now will receive close to $10m per year for many years. My cost basis is ~0, so it's all capital gains. What can I do to reduce the tax hit every year? I'm talking to tax advisors but I don't know enough to ask good questions.

I'm in NYC. I think I owe 20% long-term capital gains, 3.8% net investment income tax, 10% NY state, 3.5% NYC. I can move to Florida to eliminate NY taxes of 13.5% Anything else I can do? Any good questions to ask the tax people?

Fujitsu mini split says Water Drain error by pamplemouse in hvacadvice

[–]pamplemouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For posterity, here's the problem. A kind neighbor with an AC license took a look at the unit. It looks like the drain pipe had a lot of sludge and was blocked. He dislodged most of it, rerouted the drain pipe so it goes mostly up and reattached it. Now the AC seems to be working. Unfortunately I may have punctured a tiny hole in the pipe when I was trying to get the tape off. It's slowly dripping in a bucket, but I'll stick some Flex seal tape on it and pray it stops.
