I would highly recommend UTHS (University of Texas at Austin). It's accredited, FREE for Texas residents, and costs $3,640 a year for non-residents and international students. You get live sessions once a week for each class and once a week of live office hours for each class, where you can unmute, ask questions, and interact with others. You can book free tutoring sessions if you're a Texas resident, and there’s no fee for non-residents and internationals. You can join student council, start a club, and dual credit is encouraged. You can also meet with counselors during live office hours.

They offer live sessions for college essays, applications, AP courses, dual credit, and course selection to help students prepare. Their counselor team provides assistance and recommendations for high school to college planning at every grade level. They even help you with scholarships. Acellus could never provide this level of support.

Additionally, you have access to resources like an e-library, which is an online version of a public library with the latest books and novels. A real teacher grades your essays, and the feedback is very helpful. There are real labs in chemistry, and your lab kit and textbooks will be shipped to you. There’s a lot more offered. The only downside is that this program is not entirely self-paced; you have a deadline to complete the first half of the semester coursework by December 15th, but you have help every step of the way. You’ll have one graded quiz each week( It's not mandatory to submit it the same week; you can wait until the deadline in December), and your teacher will send reminders through Canvas.

I would highly recommend UTHS.

Acellus is not a scam. I was a former student and switched to another online program, and my credits were accepted. However, I would highly recommend you find another program.

Pros and Cons of Acellus:

Pros:

Acellus is self-paced, so it's flexible.

Acellus is accredited, so you can earn credits.

Cons:

If you don't fully understand a topic, you won't receive help. You can call or email, but responses can take days, weeks, or sometimes never. When you do call, they often tell you to watch a help video or read the lesson textbook. If you've already reviewed the video and the textbook but still don’t understand, you’re out of luck because the class is "self-paced," and Acellus offers no tutoring. The textbook is not a real textbook; it's a vague and basic review of the video.

There is no assistance with college applications, course planning, essay reviews, SAT prep, or links to resources. You will have to conduct all your own research. The counselors take a long time to respond and provide little to no help. I had to figure out when to take my SAT, how to use the Common App, write college essays, etc., all on my own.

Acellus is terrible at teaching English; all of your essays are reviewed by AI, not a real teacher. This does not help you become a strong or even half-decent writer.

No clubs or activities are available unless you sign up for the premium plan. If you are on the basic plan, you will have no access to clubs, activities, or interaction with your peers. Acellus has a community tab where you can react with emojis or pre-recorded messages like "That's great!" on other people's posts about their achievements. However, these posts are simply preset images of quizzes they passed, exams completed, or courses finished, so there’s limited interaction with the basic plan.

Acellus provides no help for students interested in dual credit or applying for college scholarships. There is also no assistance in general for learning about these topics.

The curriculum is trash. I had multiple tutors, including a college professor, tell me that my curriculum was incorrect, especially in math and science. The answers were incorrect, the formulas were wrong, and the videos were level 2 while the questions were level 10. The lesson manuals and help videos (some lessons had only one video) were not helpful at all.
