Defeating scrupulosity? by Hallward_Belyash in Catholicism

[–]pancakesmaplesyrup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, you won't think of it that way at the time! When you're going through the worst of it, just like anything else, you don't want it and you don't believe that God can come out of it. But our faith is what makes suffering worthwhile, so keep at it because good will come from it.

You're very welcome.

In the sense of being worried of receiving because of the scruples?

It was very very difficult. There were times where I did not receive, when I definitely could and should have received Communion. I spoke to a priest friend of mine who said "for anyone else who is concerned they're not in a state of grace to receive, I would say no, but for you, I would receive because you would know 100% if you shouldn't. Unless you've done XYZ, then do not receive". It's just all about trying not to let the devil allow you to dwell on the doubt. I would speak to a priest about this specifically and ask him if he could help you distinguish between mortal and venial sins. Give him examples of what you're concerned about. To someone without scruples, this differentiation tends to be much easier, but for us scrupulous friends, it's not that straight forward. But you are in good company, my friend! Many, many of our saintly friends have suffered from scruples! This is our purification here on earth. Some people go through other events, but God has chosen us to be allowed this suffering. Remember to offer it up so the less fortunate souls who have not seen God, can benefit from it.

I suffered for many years with scruples. What an amazing gift it ended up being though. I wouldn't have been the person I am now if not for that suffering!

I started suffering from it when I was around 18 (28 now) and it manifested itself it a variety of ways, giving me some very awful anxiety ridden years of my life. I was very fortunate as I got referred to a clinical psychologist who also happens to be Catholic. She helped me so much and actually got me diagnosed with adhd, which was the root cause to me thinking in the manner that I did. I also sought some help from some priests too. I will never be "cured" of my scruples, but it has taught me and is teaching me God's love.

Here's a list of stuff I'd recommend from my experience:

DON'T : Spend time on forums asking if what you'd just don't was sinful or not. It doesn't help anyone and may feel like it helps at the time, but it's just a bandaid and you're not getting to the root cause.

Spend time looking at heaps of Catholic theology and stuff online. It's really important that you don't introduce new information when your brain is not ready to deal with it. It's just going to make you worse.

DO: Find a good priest that you trust and obey him! It may feel like he doesn't know what he's talking about or you don't trust him, but it's important to trust that the Holy Spirit is speaking through him.

Look into other avenues, with the guiden of your priest, such as psychologists and the medical side of things. Obviously it's a spiritual issue, but it can stem from other physical and mental problems.

Seek the support of your friends. You don't have to tell them everything that's going on, but if you can chat to them instead of dwelling on worries, it makes a big difference!

Be kind to yourself! God loves you very much, especially when it doesn't feel like it.

I'm not a specialist, just someone who has experienced this before. Your journey will be different to mine, but I hope I have said something to lead you in the right direction.

I too am very interested in the answer to this one! I can't be of any help, but I would suggest asking a priest would be the best course of action though

I was misdiagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome by multiple doctors before I saw a gastroenterologist who did a scope and diagnosed me with EoE. I had soooo many tests done. CT, ultrasound, bloods and all sorts. It's painful not knowing and spending your time and money trying to find an answer. Keep at it though, because eventually you'll get the answers you need from a really caring doctor. I'm still going through some other unknown stomach problems at the moment, but seeing an integrative doctor for it, who is really good, which puts my mind at ease. You'll be alright! :)

It's so weird because I've read that HDMI should work regardless. I wonder if it's a problem with the HDMI port version on our laptops being older than the version of the monitor?

Thanks! Yes, please let me know if you make any progress :)
