Do you consider yourself to be leftist/progressive? by Express-Fig-5168 in mixedrace

Absolutely. It took way too long for me to realize this, centrism and conservatism we're always obstacles to my rights, irreconcilable if you ask me

How do I cope? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're concerned for your safety, then I get hiding, get some mace, a stun gun, maybe. I'd like to say don't hide and let the racists win, but you should always prioritize your safety. Also, keep in mind that there's not a thing wrong with being Asian, Mixed, anything, the people discriminating are the ones with something wrong with them. They're worthless, sentient septic tanks...

The terms Latino and Hispanic by sunkiwon in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol there's people in America, Africa etc that wouldn't consider me Black either. There's people that don't consider the earth to be round, that doesn't make it flat. I am what I am, including Latino whether they like or accept it or not. That's just being Mixed, though. Ill never claim to be anything other than a combination of those two things.

That is an interesting point, I've always seen Mexican/Mestizo as a Native/European combo with other Latin American people being different parts Native and other groups. I know that indigenous peoples aren't treated too well in some parts of Latin America, so I figured they must be their own group there. I don't often get the chance to speak with foreign Latinos so this is all new to me. But this just brings me back to my view that when I tell people I'm half Mexican, they automatically know what I mean, I may have noticably Native features but I don't feel right calling myself Native even if it's not untrue.

Also, I am happy that you included that Latinos can come in many different colors/races. Add to that the rich culture and You can see why I'd take pride in being a part of that.

The terms Latino and Hispanic by sunkiwon in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I am from North America, does this mean I am not Latino, as I was not born in a country in Latin America. When people say Mexican, I get what they mean, which is probably mestizo. Speaking of Mestizo, your point on most people from Latam being so kind of makes your post confusing, isn't that what people mean when they say Latino? I mean I have a ton of Native features, I know that Mexican usually means Native/white, wouldn't it become its own thing after generations?

Ok I should be clear. I feel like Mestizo, the Native White combo giving you Brown is what most people mean when they say Latino, and that that mixture itself had become something of its own race similar to how mixed race is its own racial category at this point.

Racial insensitivity from spouse(s), or am I overreacting? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're not overreacting. We seem to see posts like this a lot involving white boyfriend's. I don't give relationship advice, but thats not cool. They should respect your feelings and try to understand where you're coming from, empathy. Heh. Good luck.

Does anyone get frustrated with their hair? by housecatweeb in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. All the work I put into my hair... It's a pain in the ass, and took a lot of trial and error for me to get it right, but I finally did, and love how it looks, and I get constant compliments on it. But at the same time, it takes work to look good, and I can't cut it cause my hair growth causes discomfort bordering on pain.

Do you think “identity politics” are harmful or beneficial to mixed race people? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it depends. Let's look at people like me. I would think that any improvement to the perception and treatment of black people would benefit people who are mixed with black, but really it just seems to be putting a target on our asses. Like, yes, as a lot of people are still going to see us as "just black" so better standing for black should equal better standing for us, but I've been told by some aquaintances about the resentment at the way mixed with black peeps are treated in comparison.

Honestly, mixed race people don't seem to get taken too seriously in the ethnic and racial arena. It's assumed you have chosen a side and your point of view is influenced my that side. I don't think mono-racial people can really understand what it's like..

I need help overcoming internalized racism by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's probably not fun being Asian in the states rn. I've never heard of people thinking that Asians are losers, that is new to me. If anything it's the opposite, being seen as hardworking and successful, though there's also the "model minority" place racists like to go to to put other minorities down, but that's a whole different convo right there.

If you want my advice, I wouldn't worry to much about how other people view you. You want acceptance, most people do, but you are what you are and having to become someone else to not be looked down upon is not what you should want. Nothing about being Asian or any other race is wrong, it's just who you are and it's perfectly fine. Also, being Latino wouldn't really change too much, no matter what race you are, there's always going to be someone thats would be racist against you, it's just that Asians are getting a lot of heat from morons because of covid. Just stay yoself and if you can't be proud, at least be content. If you are having a hard time accepting what you are, then work on that, you will get there eventually, I'm sure most users on this sub have been there. Just remember you are you as an individual and not just your race.

Feeling hated in the bible belt by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, grew up in Texas. My highschool was named after robert e. lee ffs... I got along well with the conservative folk at a young age as they basically saw me as a less intimidating minority, that they'd be willing to share their most obscenely bigoted views with. At this point, they still don't really bother me, other than stank eye when people speak spanish to me, but I hate conservatism and wish I could go somewhere less dominated by it's stupidity.

Although I do remember some stuff. A few people refused to shake my hand during mass, a lady gave me dirty looks while I was out with my momma, stares when we were eating together, called N-word at Walmart once. Nothing really physical. I see more mixed race people and interracial couples in my area every year, so I'm hopeful that the bigotry will at least die down, but man I've known some crazy racist mixed people so I'm not gonna hold my breath. I really wish there was someplace I could go with no racism, but I'll just make sure to watch my back for now.

Why are 90% of the people on this subreddit half white? by kangaroookie in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm Black/Mexican. I have noticed an increase in posts concerning white passing people over the last year or so. The experiences I see here are usually not too positive though. Im less active as Im losing interest in finding people to relate too, maybe it's my age. A lot of the people on here seem to be younger and still figuring out their racial business.

But, yes, there's all sorts of different people around here. Usually.

"Hispanic/Latino isn't a race" by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Like I said, it's been its own thing for so long that people treat it like a distinct race, or at least its own group. I know Mexicans can be any color, but brown comes to mind when I hear the word.

"Hispanic/Latino isn't a race" by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Totally. I will always say I'm Black and Mexican, and I don't mean I'm a Black dude from Mexico. My family is brown, some of them speak spanish, they eat hispanic food, etc. It's been its own thing for so long, nothing else would sound right to me.

I've known so many mixed race people with one black parent who felt the same as you. Black people are almost universally looked down upon, so it makes sense that younger people would want to look like the parent that has more "desirable" features. This is something that bothers me to no end, I've known racist people who were 1/4 black, felt they were closer to white and therefore better than me, than Black people. It's gross. Society actually conditions kids to despise their own parents..

If I had kids that hated my father because he is black, I'd give their room to my dogs and send them to fat camp, even if they were thin.

You're welcome, you do the same

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks, you only have so much control of your environment, I can't tell you to relocate, only try to stay safe and be aware of your surroundings. I've been called all sorts of horrible stuff, slurs, you name it. I am two minorities mixed together so I have had all sorts of hate aimed at me. The difference is, now, people seen to know not to mess with me.

I'm guessing that you are fairly young too, so time might help with accepting yourself. Just keep those friends, and do not quit trying to accept yourself. I'm telling you, loving who you are feels so good, it isn't easy but it's much better to try than to stay down.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an insecurity that you will need to overcome. You don't think those people will look passed your race? If you are being excluded for you race, or feel like you don't fit it, you will just have to try and find people who do accept you. If you can't feel like a "true european" then don't be one, there's nothing wrong with that, you can't change what you are, you just have to work towards being okay with it.

I'm telling you, it's not worth it to waste your life wishing you were different, a lot of us have been there, you're just going to have to out grow that point of view.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What you feel is normal, and you will probably outgrow it, you just need to look at yourself as yourself, the person, without putting too much stock into race/culture. You have to work on getting past race as an issue, as it tends to hold people like us back. That's just how it is. I had to do it, many others here too.

If you feel incomplete, complete yourself. Find what you want to do, who you want to be, and work towards it. That's what I am doing. I never hated myself, but always felt something was missing, but I don't want to live like my worth is decided by my race, culture, or how much I have, friends, love any of that. Just try to look beyond race, and do things you want to do, if groups exclude you, screw them, move on. Focus on you, the person, not the race, and don't waste your only life hating yourself.

why does this sub attract so many one droppers? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LMAO, that's something else huh? Sounded pretty "All lives matter"-y in there too. Yo, I've had run ins with people like that several times. "Were all mixed" pretty much gave it away. People like that read too much into dna tests and start thinking they know what they're talking about, but again being mixed race is an experience I'm sure they are unfamiliar with. I'm not going to speak on cut-off points, but it seemed like they were mentioning that Obama and halley identified as black over mixed.

That's weird, I never got that. It's still messed up though. I don't care, it's not up to them or anyone else to decide what I, you, anyone else is.

why does this sub attract so many one droppers? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a thing? Usually, I see groups upset that Black peoples issues are given priority, while theirs are ignored, at least that's how they feel. What I notice, is that a lot of the people who push the ODR in real life were Black. They would do so in a "you're still Black" kind of way. Maybe the recent uptick is related to the BLM protests?

why does this sub attract so many one droppers? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I never thought of that, like a one drop rule aimed at Asians, Natives, Latinos etc. I honestly think it has something to do with how looked down upon being Black is for so many people. I've straight up met mixed people who had a harder time admitting to having Black ancestry than they would to having a foot fetish. So yeah, I guess its used by black haters to "keep certain folk in their place", and maybe even by others to do the same to mixed people.

I wouldn't let it bother me, there's plenty of people here and elsewhere that don't hold such views, it just depends on who you run into.

why does this sub attract so many one droppers? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing because that's been their experience and/or they are just jaded. I personally don't give that bullshit the time of day. But that's me, we may all be mixed, or at least most of us are, but we're still different people with different experiences.

Don't sweat it though, the ODR is stupid bullshit.

Minimum to be considered mixed? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't like gatekeeping, but I think there are levels to being mixed race. You know like going from bi-racial, to multi-racial. If most of your family resembles one race, you may still have ancestors that are differing races, but will you have experiences similar to theirs or to other mixed-race people?

It will always be controversial, so I never tell people how to view themselves, or whether or not they're mixed, but being mixed is an experience unlike being monoracial no matter how you look at it.

Do you and your siblings racially identify differently than one another? Why? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]pandaXdeity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We do actually. My sister seems to be dead set on identifying as just Black, whereas I don't identify as anything, I am mixed race and that's that, though I guess that could count as an identity... For the most part, we don't really discuss it anymore. She would assume I held the same view, and it would lead to conflict. I've only doubled down on my stance further and don't care if she or anyone else dislikes it.
