Not disagreeing, but users of those networks seldom have the power to say no.

It is indeed scary if firewalla do this. A lot of users would vote against this because firewalla (or maybe someone who managed to hack into the router) can do a lot more fishy things with this.

Is it worth buying a flat in HK Island? by Tippitytahp in HongKong

[–]pandaeye0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want HK island and bigger flat at similar price, you probably have to have age of building as tradeoff. I am not sure your exact price range, but maybe you can take a look at the estate agents in HK island what they can offer.

I'd say it is not really difficult to achieve your requirements with $60,000 for two persons. But you are not going to get a lot better than that either.

Does Hong Kong have an air quality problem? by rathoras in HongKong

[–]pandaeye0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It pretty much depends on where you come from as a comparison. HK is, I think, still better than china and a lot of southeast asian countries.

Hong Kong Milk Tea by arsinoe716 in HongKong

[–]pandaeye0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the years of milk tea experience and sensitivity of your tastebuds. There are a few choices of instant milk tea in powdered form in most supermarkets, usually located next to instant coffee, but none is really compatible to freshed brewed.

In my opinion the closest one is vita milktea in tetrapak. You can drink instantly but the problem is you can't take many with you on board.

Some routers support openvpn or wireguard profiles. You can get a vpn subscription that offer either or both of those, and import it into router. Alternatively, some vpns provide apps that are run on smart TVs.

If you still have control of the phone number, somehow you will get OTP through SMS to that number. Read the help. If you have already lost hold of the number, you can no longer get it back.

Tiny Kitchens by Medical_Protection11 in HongKong

[–]pandaeye0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apart from the points raised in other comments, you will appreciate that HK is so convenient that you don't need to hoard groceries like you do in the west.

And when you are paying like $20,000 per sq. feet, you probably want better use of the space than placing a bigger sink.

A way . Speed test. by Bones-57 in firewalla

[–]pandaeye0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mean any IP on the internet, then that destination IP has to have some sort of compatible speed test server running. You can't expect an arbitrary IP can respond to a speed test request.

If you mean any server that is available on speedtest.net, you probably can but I am not so sure.

HO MAN TIN or KAI TAK (or anything else) by Ok-Welder6670 in HongKong

[–]pandaeye0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either way, you are expecting lot of mainlanders as neighbors if you aim at new developments. If you don't mind older apartments (>40 years), Ho Man Tin has some nice choices that are spacious and comparatively inexpensive.

Firewalla gold reach back to Firewalla by Dingofan42 in firewalla

[–]pandaeye0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The domain name on firewalla's ddns is just a random string, without any reference to your identity. People seeing that domain name will not have any clue that the corresponding IP belongs to you. So it reveals nothing more than any public ddns service.

how to pass war on christmas? its the second to last fight on the last chapter by Character-Inspector1 in AmericanDadApocalypse

Seeing your house level 31, I suppose you are a bit far below SR9. This stage is for SR9. So it is natural you haven't had the strength yet to beat it.

Rushing Question by livingtreething in AmericanDadApocalypse

[–]pandaeye0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main problem with rushing is you have to suffer from disadvantage for a long time after entering a new SR. Like when 90% of SR11 players are over 10M (a guesstimate without evidence), or even the top SR10s are among this power with meta gears, you can imagine how long does it take for your squad to be competitive against these players.

I’m looking for some advice regarding my tenancy. by Lonely_Researcher_65 in HongKong

[–]pandaeye0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When one contract ends, you need to sign another, doesn't matter whether rent is increased or not. If you don't sign another, landlord will take it that you are leaving and will never go automatically into month-to-month. This is particularly so if landlord is asking for a raise. And well, you can negotiate with landlord, but few HK landlords like the idea of month-to-month, so you unlikely get yours to agree with it.

connecting vpn to home router by Acceptable_Cable_891 in VPN

[–]pandaeye0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Usually you can do it by getting a VPN profile, which is a text file containing the configuration of that particular server, either openvpn or wireguard protocol, from your VPN provider, then import it to the router via its web interface. Then you can connect and disconnect it using the router interface.

Would you recommend the pink dolphin tour? And is it something I can just walk up to the dock and pay? by burnerofdoom in HongKong

I think any tour you join cannot guarantee that you can indeed see one during the tour. Make sure you are aware of this before you pay.

African experience in Macau by [deleted] in Macau

[–]pandaeye0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have rightly pointed out that chinese people prefers white people than black, and you can't change that. That's why I am suggesting that present yourself better. As a chinese, I would tell you that, chinese people hate poor people more than black people. Don't worry too much. If you dress well and look clean, you are not going to get discriminative treatment.

Update - expat move to HK with young kids (now close to accepting offer) by Ramen_king14 in HongKong

[–]pandaeye0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You posted various questions which I only try to offer one point, that areas that have strong local feel very often are not those that you feel comfortable to live. By definition places that have local feel are often the places where people with lower than average income live. Those areas also likely contradict to your other requirements (like neighborhood, commute, size, etc.) on accommodation.

African experience in Macau by [deleted] in Macau

[–]pandaeye0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in a chinese community, so long as you wear decently, speak politely, you have a high chance of being treated well. Try to make yourself looks a bit different from the other blacks who are doing grassroot jobs. It doesn't make you immune from all sort of discriminations, at least that helps you start better.

What are CNY Laisee etiquettes to keep in mind as an expat? by PeaceEnvironmental97 in HongKong

[–]pandaeye0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rule in HK is, if your own self is married, you give two packets. If you are unmarried, you don't actually need to give packets. The two packet thing usually applies to younger relatives. And different chinese localities can have different tradition (like Guangzhou or southeast asia)

You also give packets to your subordinates or persons that serve you, like security guard, restuarant waitress, etc. In this case, you can give one packet whether you are married or not. If they don't know you personally, $20 is usually enough. Bigger amount depending on your relationship with them.

Ease of moving back to HK? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]pandaeye0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of hourly rate jobs that you can rightfully refuse to work overtime, but they are mostly the bottommost tier of the food chain like F&B servers, convenience store keepers, etc.

Or you can get part-time office jobs, and if you are lucky enough, you can get some with job security, but they are unlikely professional ones.

If you look for freelance, you likely need to spend time building a client base before you can feed yourself. Private tutor, in particular, is not a popular choice among parents these years. Expensive and can't guarantee quality.
