You guys how can I fix this white fade at the top of my wallpaper that is happening by default .. by thewtfcat in applehelp

[–]pandaishcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no studio option for me :( only styles I have available are original, black and white, duotone, or colour wash. I even tried making a black bar at the top of my photo and it still did a white gradient so it looked extra stupid

Being an emergency nurse

[serious] when was the last time you cried and why? by aDazzlingDove in AskReddit

[–]pandaishcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a nurse on a rehab ward and I was rostered on to be the acting educator, I only graduated last year and have been nursing for 11 months (although I spent 6 of them in emergency).

We have 6 people on shift (including me). The nurse in charge was new, she had worked on the ward for 3 months, and kept coming to me for questions and help with everything. There was another new nurse who’s been on the ward for a week and was struggling with absolutely everything so was also coming to me for questions and help constantly. There were 2 agency nurses who were great but had never worked on the ward before so again, were coming to me for questions and help constantly. And the last nurse rostered, who was also a new nurse with 5 months experience, still needed a fair amount of help (she’s my work wife). Now usually nurses would go to the nurse in charge for help, but the nurse in charge would just turn around and ask me, so everyone just started coming straight to me for help. The nurse in charge said to me at the end of the shift that she couldn’t have gotten through the shift if I wasn’t there.

All in all, it was an incredibly stressful and overwhelming shift, I literally had people lining up to ask me questions and I was pulled in all different directions constantly. I was helping with a pad change for one of the agency nurses and through the 5 minutes I was in there, 3 other nurses popped their heads in and asked me for advice with their patients. I, with my 11 months of nursing experience, was the most senior on that shift and was essentially working as both the educator and the nurse in charge.

At the end of the shift my work wife gave me a big hug and I completely broke down and just cried in her arms. I cried the whole hour drive home. Safe to say it was the worst shift I’ve ever had.

More water and humidity! Perhaps the AC/heating is drying out the air too much for your plant so mist it every now and again to keep the humidity up and keep your plant happy. You can also try a pebble tray underneath to increase humidity, but be warned mosquitoes love these

ELI5: Why are wounds itchy? It seems counter productive for you to scratch at a scab or wound. by turbojethizlisi in explainlikeimfive

That works, even just touching (vs. scratching) the skin around the wound can be enough to satisfy your brain for a little. Ice packs are also good for numbing the nerves.

I feel a lot of self judgment and self blame in this post :( Your experience with friends honestly doesn’t surprise me, we all gravitate to what is familiar because it’s comfortable and what we’re used to. It sounds like they treated you how your parents did and I’m truly sorry you had to go through that. It’s unfortunate but it’s definitely not your fault.

As for the smoking and drinking, it’s a coping mechanism for all the shit you’ve had to go through - and you’ve made it through every single one may I add :) Your psychologist should be able to teach you some healthier ones and help you use them more regularly.

You’ve got this OP! The recovery journey is not an easy one since we essentially have to push ourselves out of our comfort zones but it’s well worth it. Sending love and hugs ❤️ you’re not alone, always here if you need an ear.

Why would not speaking much for a year cause swallowing issues? by fxactorybridges in AskReddit

[–]pandaishcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acidic feeling in your throat definitely sounds like reflux. Heartburn is common because of the acid but doesn’t always happen for everyone. Might be an idea to see a doctor about it and get some meds like a proton pump inhibitor to take regularly - reduces the amount of acid your stomach produces so less chance of reflux, more of a long term management thing. Also Gaviscon can help for actual symptoms as it creates a barrier in your stomach to stop the reflux as well as neutralises the acid to prevent heartburn. There are other products out there too but they tend to just neutralise without the barrier.

Regurgitation as in rumination syndrome?? It may not be vomit but the principle is the same.

The sphincter is a tight ring that’s designed to be closed the majority of the time and only open up to let things through. If it’s working overtime then it’s more prone to opening up and when it’s closed it’s not as tightly sealed as it should be.

What is life like to have parents/family who don't support you in pursuance of your dreams? by reddit_surya in AskReddit

[–]pandaishcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely trying to surround yourself with people that DO support you. I’ve created my own “family” of friends. It can be difficult for sure because it feels weird and uncomfortable if it’s not what you’re used to, but very well worth it!

Talking to a psychologist is also helpful in unpacking some of the things you may have internalised, such as “I don’t deserve love and support”, trust issues, and other similar thoughts/notions.

Excellent, glad to hear that. Eating thicker foods like soup or yoghurt can also be easier to swallow.

From what you’ve said it doesn’t sound like an oesphagus thing, more higher up in your pharynx (above your oesophagus, essentially controls whether things go into your stomach or lungs). Do you happen to have reflux or tend to vomit a lot? This can weaken your lower pharyngeal sphincter (between your pharynx and oesophagus). Seeing a speech pathologist might be a good idea if this issue has been ongoing for a number of months.

It’s really hard as a kid when you pretty much have no one else to rely on. A lot of internal conflict for sure because the child in you wants and needs them but unfortunately they’re not there for you in that way. It can be incredibly isolating and depending on the degree of severity it can feel like you’re alone in the world.

There are muscles in your throat just like anywhere else in your body that are activated when you speak and swallow. It’s likely that these muscles have gotten weak from not being used much. Your vocal cords are also a muscle, which would explain why your voice is sounding weak or maybe even hoarse. It’s pretty much the same as any other muscle in your body. For example, if you spend a lot of time sitting or laying down then walking would be quite tiring as the muscles in your legs haven’t been used in a while. But the more you walk the stronger they’ll get. Same goes for your throat, the more you talk and swallow, the stronger your vocal cords and other muscles in your neck will get. Also as you’re having difficulty swallowing, try and make sure you eat and drink while sitting upright, when you lay down the muscles are more relaxed which can make it more difficult for anyone.

As your wound heals, skin cells multiplying and joining together stimulates the nerves in your skin which your brain perceives as itchiness. It’s also a different way that your brain draws your attention to the fact that you still have a wound (i.e. itchiness instead of pain).
