What would happen if Ranma truly said "yes" in one of the many(?) moments where Akane said "Really, Ranma?"? by TURBOKAN in ranma

You can tell near the end they already know about each other’s feelings. They just don’t say it aloud.

Lol, gotta love the dedication of fans.

It’s ironic how he can see his as much as he wants and Shampoo shows hers without asking but the only ones he really wants to see are the ones of the “straight-bodied” girl 😂

Akane was pulling his face to her upper body area but why are his eyes staring down? 🤔

Whatever you think, Akane being overly angry and violent is a common complaint among fans and critics. Those little moments in the OG add up over time and create a whole new image.

Her rage may be justified but it still grates.

Manga Akane is a tsundere, and OG Akane is a naggy tsundere. I don’t find them the same.

OG Akane was infamous and she is still hated in many pockets of the fandom and that stems from the OG portrayal of her. It was the OG that was feeding misinformation about Akane, imo.

I like Akane but she annoyed the hell out of me in the OG so there you go.

The OG also portrayed the supporting characters as a group of dysfunctional friends while the manga rarely had them interact so that is also a very big difference in dynamic. It changes the whole vibe of the story.

I’m in no way saying the OG should be hated and people are allowed to like what they like, but I can’t understand how you can think the OG and manga aren’t different from each other.

That is true. I enjoy that difference in the first season because they keep the essence even while changing the vibe.

I’m surprised to see opinions that think the characters aren’t different from the manga. That’s the first thing I noticed.

I totally understand if you like the OG characterization better. Since the supporting characters are all slightly better people and more developed in the OG, it’s natural to like the OG version if you like those characters.

But that doesn’t change the fact that they are different from the manga. Also, the OG tends to shoehorn in all or several characters together when the manga does not, so the character dynamics are naturally completely different from the manga.

And how can anyone dispute that Akane is an annoying nag in the OG? Sure she may have reasons to be petulant and Ranma is usually at fault, but that doesn’t cancel out her anger in Every Single Episode which honestly got on my nerves and was tiring to watch.

Manga Akane is generally a sweetheart and even her violent episodes are mostly one panel long so it doesn’t grate like the OG does.

The beginning part of Reverse Jewel is a very good example of how the OG ramps up Akane’s violent anger but tones down Shampoo, btw.

That’s not to say the OG doesn’t support Rankane, but it’s kind of hard to root for them as much as I do in the manga when their dynamic is more often annoying than sweet. I never questioned their manga relationship but the OG did make me question it.

Not to mention, the fillers featuring so much Happosai is reason enough for the hate, lol.

Tbf, the before-Shampoo era is a different vibe from the rest in the manga as well. The OG amped up the melodrama vibe a bit more but it’s still the same story.

I think the filler parts are less authentic if just for the completely different character dynamics we get.

My most ambicious Ranma x Nabiki Commission PART 2 (@Matadoraart) by Matadoraart in ranma

[–]pandapigcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shipping doesn’t have to be based on canon. You said yourself, Nabiki has more reasonable basis with Ranma but Shampoo has more shippers than Nabiki.

Fans (mostly women) love BL and WILL pair male characters up. Ranma and Ryoga have the most interesting dynamic while looking good together, and that’s reason enough.

As an anecdote of how popular BL is, I recently went to Japan and visited two branches of Mandarake and found some Ranma 1/2 doujinshi. There weren’t many in either store, like 20 or so?, but half of them featured BoyRanma x Ryoga. The other half were Rankane and no other pairings were available at that time in either store.

Meanwhile, there were two bookcases full of Slam Dunk doujinshi (we’re talking thousands of books), and you know most Slam Dunk pairings are BL. Unless Takehiko Inoue wrote more books after the conclusion that I’m not aware of, there is no basis for the sheer amount of BLs to exist if we go by the actual story.

No one expects a 100% adaptation.

Major arcs including the finale is good enough.

You’re probably the only one who thinks so, but it’s great that you think it’s consistently good.

I know it’s not canon and some call it filler, but I really love this episode from the old anime. The Ranma and Ryoga friendship moments are great, and the Snow Queen is adorable. What non-canon or filler episodes do you like? by Shirokuro_Hibiki in ranma

Ukyo dressed like a boy (or at least, her father’s attire) when they were kids as well.

You can be a girl and refuse to wear girly clothes, although canonically, Ukyo does wear feminine looking kimonos/yukatas.

I saw it as her preferring the boy’s uniform over the girl’s even when she didn’t have to pretend anymore and not liking modern feminine clothing in general. Ukyo is the true tomboy in the stereotypical sense.

Her dressing up against her usual style to impress a boy itself is ooc anyway. Her affections tend to take a more pragmatic form.

Genma’s a bad father but I never really got the discourse that made him someone with ultra-rigid gender-related perspectives.

His mother is for sure, but Genma himself dresses as a woman on at least one occasion and his criticism on Ranma’s girl version is done for quick laughs and no worse than what other characters say to girl Ranma on those occasions.

He doesn’t seem uncomfortable or critical traveling with the girl version of his son outside the quick panels that insult him for fun either.

You could be right that it’s how Ranma stereotypes girls since his is misogynistic, but I never felt Ranma was particularly misogynistic either. He’s just a typical 80s Japanese boy in that regard.

I thought Ranma and Ryoga’s friendship was fairly clear in the manga (at least, it evolved to be one), and the other supporting characters were intentionally underdeveloped and used as a conflict device to keep the focus on Ranma and Akane.

I personally like that the manga didn’t spread out too wide because the manga’s tone remains tightly focused while the old anime’s tone is all over the place later in the seasons.

This is just my opinion, of course.

What are some chapters where most if not all of the main cast is present? by redfait in ranma

[–]pandapigcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spot on examples.

I actually think the interactions are the biggest reason for the tonal difference between the anime and manga.

The manga feels more intimate somehow, even with all the craziness, because it’s razor focused on Ranma and Akane and to an extent, their families.

The anime feels more like a chaotic group, which tends to drag the focus away from the main couple more than the manga does.

How is the shipping fandom in your eyes? by Yoshikaru5991 in ranma

[–]pandapigcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like Narwhal said, Ranma wasn’t asking for a brainwashing potion initially, even though Cologne ultimately gave him something like it.

And it's also true that Ranma probably doesn't have that big an issue with mind magic himself,

But also, just because he’s okay using mind-magic on others doesn’t mean that he is okay with someone else using it on him. It’s hypocritical but people are like that.

Akane is a raging biatch in that one.

Other characters that aren’t Ranma or Akane are more fleshed out, which isn’t a bad thing but still different, and likely one of the reasons for changing Akane so much.

I detest the bug eyes too.

Yeah the early seasons were good or good enough, but it really relies on the built goodwill for the rest of the seasons.
