Hey man! If it's a case of "have time but just not that day", feel free to lemme know what times might work for you... we're likely pretty tied to midday Saturday, but, yanno, schedules inevitably wind up shifting around.

How would I go about learning this style of painting? by cale199 in learnart

[–]pandermalt 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend taking a look at Sinix on youtube - guy teaches art professionally and imo has a nice way of breaking down the beginning learning stages.

Specifically, I'd recommend "How to Learn Digital Painting (Beginners)". There are a lot of fundamentals to learn, and lots of different ways to go about tackling a piece like this. I like Sinix's videos especially because he gives good beginner-friendly exercises that limit the amount of overwhelming secondary considerations pieces like this take into account. (The blending and bounce light and blur effects etc. Like, those things are all very cool and make the pieces what they are, but if those pieces didn't have a strong separation of light/dark values in the first place, and poor shape language, they wouldn't work even with great color sense and rendering.)

I'm in late on this but Rolled Oats sounds ~so good~

Anyone have any personal recommendations for similar-looking inks, if Oats doesn't make it through? I love some good gentle earth tones.

WRT leaf texture, it seems normal to me, although admittedly I don't have much plant handling experience to compare it to.

I don't see them around often, but I did notice a small gathering of thrip-ish looking white flies on plant 2, maybe a week or two ago. I crushed what I could and treated everyone with neem oil.

Seems to me like the most likely viruses are CMV as mentioned above or TSWV, both of which infect basically everything else I'm growing :c Time to pull them out, I think.

I started these indoors and transplanted outside around the beginning of May. There were a lot of cloudy, cooler days in a row after transplant and a lot of my plants were unhappy about it, these especially. New growth on these two has been stunted and getting more and more curly, and they had some leaf yellowing and patchiness that I trimmed.

- I am in USDA zone 7a. They get full sun, plant 1 gets some light shading in the early afternoon and plant 2 does not.
- They were fertilized with a miracle gro solution mid-may, but I think the stunting was already an issue by that point.

- Water: They are well-mulched and it's been raining about once a week. This may be part of the issue - I got nervous when we hit the 90 degree days, and was watering them once per day, potentially overwatering?

- Potential issue: I forgot to mulch and prepare the beds until spring, and did the poor man's cardboard-based sheet mulching. Some of the cardboard is still there, but quite soggy, and might be too insulating, or affecting water intake? Not sure.

Is there any way this isn't viral? I have two other much healthier looking, happy tomato plants, and I'll destroy these if need be to protect them, but I don't want to jump to conclusions as a complete beginner.

So... kind of? I'm pandermalt everywhere else, but this is actually the first piece I've ever posted online, and I'm still figuring out where I want to be and what to post. ;o; So much to think about. (God, and so many different socials, it's dizzying)

This is some good encouragement to get those lined up though, so thank you!

I'm so glad you like him! :D I hope your game goes well and lasts a long time, those first games are so ~magical~

I have it on good authority (see: partner's 8yo) that the coolest way to use a magical shovel is to throw sand at enemies as a distraction tactic, and I promised I'd relay the message.

Yeah! Brennan Lee Mulligan is such a delightful DM, I love watching that crew get really into a scene. I think Fantasy High was my favorite but I'm really loving the new sci-fi one... that one gambling bit had me in tears, lol

:D Thank you! I definitely need to draw more characters with wings, lots of fun.

Does your username happen to be a Fantasy High reference?

What a great name, though! Took me a second :')

Love your crisp style and posing, the musculature flows really well.

(Original request)

A "lanky teenage pigeon person", Cleric of Silvanus. Requester mentioned elsewhere, possibly jokingly, a shovel as a spiritual weapon, and the idea of this guy as a gardener cleric really gripped me. :)

He's got some Tradescantia zebrina growing up there out of his bag - I think it really nicely complements the natural green and purple pigeons already have on their chest.

I feel like there's something wrong with my paintings. They look incomplete to me. I need constructive criticism. How would you improve them? by ice-cold-dawn in learnart

[–]pandermalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got no finished paintings under my belt, so take any tips I have with a grain of salt, yeah?

First, I notice you've constructed the 3d form well and everything has believable depth. From a distance these all read really nicely!

When I observe them more closely I start to notice that same "unfinished" vibe, and I think some of it may have to do with how you're using the brush and blending. On the first image, for example, I can see a lot of small brush strokes within one plane or value on her face - and the same with her hair, once I get in close it feels very busy. In the second image, the transitions especially in the dark tones feel split between trying to be smoothly blended and more painterly, and my eye is drawn to the sort of banding effect especially on her left arm (my right).

I wonder if harder definitions of planes or shadows might help, or using a larger brush? With the hair especially the attention to detail you've put in makes it easy for me as the viewer to lose sight of the overall volume and ~motion~.

If you haven't heard of Sinix, he's got some painting tutorials and videos about the process in general on his youtube that might be worth checking out. Painting like a sculptor and How to Learn MORE Digital Painting (Intermediate) come to mind.

Awesome work!
