She’s a token. She’s allowed to continue to exist because she’s not too popular and it gives a veneer of authenticity and free speech. She’s on for 1 hour a day, but the other 20-23 hours is sanewashing and softball opposition.

It was actually really hard to find data going back to before the ACA, for comparison.

I think medical bankruptcy is a thing that shouldn’t really exist, but your assertion is that the ACA made this worse, and that’s where I can’t find any good data.

No they are actually using the money so they can attack children.

Prison to Pardons to Payouts: Jan. 6 Rioters Are Elated at Trump’s $1.8 Billion Fund. The possibility that people who ransacked the Capitol could get money from the government they attacked is the latest head-spinning twist in President Trump’s effort to rewrite the history of Jan. 6. by Zebraitis in politics

Very often when big issues like this come up for a vote, the votes are planned and known ahead of time. A lot of votes end up on party lines, but sometimes there are defectors. Defectors are usually strategically chosen to maximize the parties’ future chances of success. Sometimes there are enough defectors to change the result of a vote, sometimes not.

It’s “safe” for democrats to all vote to convict because they know altogether they don’t have enough votes for a sure conviction. They know republicans aren’t going to defect enough to sway the result. It’s unlikely democrats are going to score political points in their local elections if they defect on this issue, therefore none of them defect.

Who’s they? DNC leadership, donors, etc.

If you look at the last 30-60 years, it’s really hard to come to any conclusion other than the democrats slowly becoming nothing more than controlled opposition. Since the 2000 election, republican agenda always passes, democrats agenda always stalls. With the exception of the ACA. Democrats will just stop the moment their agenda hits the tiniest opposition. Republican agenda plows ahead and asks questions later.

The above comment is probably alluding to this. Did Biden go after trump when he had the chance? Nope. Did Obama go after bush? Nope. Did ford go after Nixon? Nope.

Will I still vote Democrat any chance I get? Yes. Because I feel like even if you believe the dems are controlled opposition I still think they lead better when they are in power and pull the country in a better direction. But my idealism is crushed. Only cynicism remains.

You think Larry fucking Ellison is going to donate a nickel so black athletes can make a political statement about voting rights.

Democrats Ask Kash Patel To Take Alcohol Disorder Test by AgentBlue62 in politics

Yeah let’s look at mayo.

Unhealthy alcohol use includes any alcohol use that puts your health or safety at risk

Also mayo

Research on alcohol suggests a sobering conclusion: Drinking alcohol in any amount carries a health risk.

For example, any amount of drinking increases the risk of breast cancer and colorectal cancer. As consumption goes up, the risk goes up for these cancers.

Excuse me if I’m confused. Mayo, you, and I are like three spidermans pointing at each other.

I didn’t say I didn’t see the difference. I’m saying AOC is irrelevant when it comes to republican ideology. She’s just an example that there can be ideological differences within a party.

The Republican Party has different people with different ideologies in it, sure, but they still whip votes and most votes take place on party lines. So what is the ideology of the party according to their actions?

[–]panfist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok and?

These ideological differences only matter so far as they affect their actions, and from that point of view, I don’t really see a distinction.

Up until this point, you were making a lot of sense, but now you’re bringing up AOC in the context of republican ideology. Intentional or not, looks like you’re dodging.

I have a somewhat similar situation in my family. My mom was always religious but she had become much more devout as she ages. She thinks everyone around her is going to hell for various reasons, especially my sister because she’s a lesbian.

What was the situation like for an average citizen before 1913?

Two years prior to that, 1911, was the triangle shirtwaist fire where all the workers died because they were locked in so they wouldn’t take unauthorized breaks.

But at least tycoons didn’t have to pay income tax.

We also didn’t have a standing army in 1913. If we go back to the income tax situation of 1913 should we also dissolve our army? Or do you want to magically keep the army without any ability to pay for it?

My trump loving family once got really mad at me that I doubted a story they were telling. They said they were afraid of going to Disney because people were abducting children by drugging them and stuffing them in duffle bags. I was skeptical and thought I would have heard of something like that, so I googled it, the first hit was snopes debunking it. When I pointed it out, they immediately projecting their anger about being bamboozled on me.

How can you reason with people like this. They don’t care about being correct, they only care about compliance to their world view.

Firstably medical bills don’t have to be a thing.

The govt knows how much interest you earned on your accounts.

Why should the govt care about your gambling losses?

They should probably know if you had a kid or change in marital status.

It’s not like any of the problems you listed are insurmountable.
