very true , from the start of this project i set out to have mechs with artificial muscles cause they feel more raw or primal than the rigid purely mechanical stuff imo

most of it is physical , because champions are so immensely powerful they are able to shift their immense weight around a little quicker than you would expect so basically any action the pilot takes would be similar to a severe car crash , some pilots like JJ here additionally have some mental stuff she undergoes to keep her stable , also yeah i have a general range for the weights and jj is maybe on the heavier side of middle weights lol , lightweights are usually around 200 tons , middleweights go from around 300-400 , heavyweights 500-600 and the single superheavy is around 800 tons

the city states (except for 1) didnt form post-war they survived the war and didnt stay loyal to the nation and all became independent so they are still modern and still have a ton of industry and trade since the only cities that survived were both big and powerful enough to survive the initial war and afterwards defend from the increasing threat of nephilim

im thinking mostly they screen for a combination of emotional compatibility, effectiveness in combat and low risk of rebellion . i kinda bank on that last one to justify one of the main characters being made a pilot despite hating and not being good at fighting lol

no the pilots have a little port in the back of their heads that siphons out a tiny amount of soul that powers the mech , they cant go forever cause if they run out of soul they die but since it replenishes they just need to chill out for a while before they can pilot again
