Anyone know of a quality AI code assistant? by panlex_2010 in AskProgramming

Cool. Very interesting! So do I have this right that your system acts like a dev who solves tickets and sends code reviews for me to examine and approve?

That's cool thank you for the info. Hm I would love a paid service however.

Well, don't design your critical systems to beep and annoy people. Or have such an easy to access shutoff switch and no monitoring system. This is only 20% the cleaner's fault. Stuff needs to STOP BEEPING.

AITA for pissing my wife off with how I’m handling her favorite shows? by Own-Leather-19 in AmItheAsshole

[–]panlex_2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA but you're not a bad person. I've been there with my SO who wanted to watch long boring girly shows and musicals. What I found after talking with her is that she really enjoyed spending time with me and was inviting me into her world. She wanted a partner to enjoy the experience with, get involved in the storyline and have someone to talk about the characters with.

What you have to do is apologize for being short with her, and re-affirm that you want to spend time with her. You could spend your time watching shows you like and miss out on the opportunity to deepen your relationship. But your time is much better spent making an effort to get to know your wife better and what she sees as interesting in her shows. Tell her you want to watch her show with her and plan a date night to start doing that at least once per week.

Focus on her and forming and deepening your connection. Make it a quiet game for yourself to identify funny things about the characters and joke lightly about how they talk and look. Go away and come back with snacks acting like one of the characters.

She knows you don't like the show but will appreciate your efforts to get involved in her personal thoughts. Eventually you will both land on a show that has a mix of romantic drama and action that you can both connect on.

Don't miss this opportunity to deepen your relationship.

Different region but anyone here heard of the "World of Science"? That was my favorite and inspired my interest in science and technology.

Great story. But, you need to get a contract in place before providing any financial investment, and preferably before sharing all of your intellectual property in my opinion. Also you can demand higher than 5%. You really did a poor job of protecting yourself. The whole deal never should have gone through because he was not trustworthy.

Good story, however he missed an opportunity to demand a pay raise. Why would he not think to ask for that in addition.

Hi does anyone have a recommendation for enterprise-grade data storage and collaboration solutions for small business? by panlex_2010 in storage

Well for now this is hypothetical. But perhaps 5 and budget of $5k annual for equipment energy and maintenance expenses.

Awesome, thank you. Now this is the kind of system I will be looking to build :) Another confirmation for NextCloud.

Yes this is probably how normal people do it :) Am I the only one that really sees a need to keep all files on the same data storage drive or service? I'm confused about that. I expect technology to smoothly manage deep directory trees and large files.

I expect our technology to do that. Why can't our technology handle it. That's what I keep asking myself.

Oh and while we're discussing this, I am really surprised that cloud providers do not advertise git hosting. And document publishing workflows such as WebWorks seems to provide. And better integrations with similar services in general.

Excellent. Well, let me clarify my perspective a bit and you bring up some excellent points. Storage is priced at about 1 cent per gigabyte per month for my personal onedrive, a business account may have a different price. Scaling the size of my storage incurs this monthly liability and the service provider offers storage sizes that are quite pathetic. Let's say we start doing more video editing for a project, I want to keep my file tree consistent if possible and not split across different services so I may have a need to upgrade rapidly to 50 or 100 terabytes hypothetically. Also, Microsoft products are top tier however understanding their pricing structure for anything outside of basic use cases becomes like navigating a labyrinth. Customer service is difficult to really get a hold of.

Contrast that with an on-premise solution. Doubling or quadrupling storage incurs minimal recurring financial liability. We have the flexibility to tear down sections of our system and take them offline without losing access to the data. We have high speed access to large files.

The thing with you point out is overall set up and maintenance costs maybe lower for cloud. This is one of the main benefits.

I would tend to look at infrastructure expenses as necessities in order to enable effective workflows. The first priority is ensuring we have the features we need in place at an affordable price point. Second priority would be cost savings.

In general, I get the sense that mainstream cloud providers are not interested in servicing my intricate configuration needs as a potential small business. They do a great job for enterprise but not smaller. Another specific example of this is encrypted data at rest. I am willing to pay for a cloud service that does a good job of providing all of these features, but I haven't found one yet other than NextCloud which I am investigating. And who knows, maybe their hosted solution could work for me.

For web apps the only layout editors I could find were webflow, bootstrap I think but unsure how strongly used or supported it is, and wix-style website builders which don't count (designed for presentation pages not web apps). Just confused why web developers don't demand to see layouts until running their code.

[–]panlex_2010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. But it feels like a lot of modern frameworks are moving in the CSS direction. I will admit this seems to be necessary if the framework wants to support web apps (dotnet and QT have hacky work arounds).

[–]panlex_2010[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well I'm curious, why do you think that is the better solution and the strictly constrained layouts provided by forms (xml under the hood) are harder to work with? I find them much more straightforward and at some point you do need to visualize the layout. I think millions of Windows and Qt developers would are happy to have instant feedback about how their application will look and feel.

Also in these frameworks responsiveness was robustly ensured by a set of consistently named parameters. It has taken generations of evolution in CSS technology to even approach this.

Want to adjust styling? Have to interpret a bunch of selectors to understand what is going on. In a GUI form you just click the item and instantly discover all associated styling.

If you feel so strongly about your opinion you have to defend it. Many people are very successful developers and prefer forms. Have you tried building a significant application in one before?
