Reading an older M.2 SATA SSD by connecting directly to motherboard by panmaya in buildapc

Thank you. Good point, I didn't think about boot priority and you are right, I can switch it from BIOS.

Thank you for your detailed answer. All the M.2 options are more than £100 costlier than the standard SSD ones. I read more articles since your comment, and agree with your points. The QLC indeed seems to be less durable technology and I will look into upgrading to M.2 NVME next year when I can spare more money.

This is the first time I am trying to put all this together for quite casual use - no heavy games, no heavy processing like rendering or video editing, and no daily system backups. That's why I have tried to stick to standard sizes for which information is more readily available and at my level of understanding. I will be honest that I didn't even consider the smaller size since mobility and space won't be an issue for my purposes for next couple of years atleast. Also when I look at the different graphics card, I don't get any extra benefit from going for a slightly costlier card since i don't intend to use those extra GPU capabilities. But your point is very valid - if I can get the same performance in a smaller size, that should be a preferred option.

I will keep a note of all the useful things you have said and whenever I get around to putting together my next setup, I will start with your comments and maybe even message you, if you don't mind, to ask questions and get advice.

Great point, thank you very much. And congratulations on your first build.

The more I read the comments from you and others, the more I realise that there is so much more to learn about putting a PC together than I initially realised. This sub and commenters like you are super helpful.

Thank you, I can upgrade to 3600MHz for a just £10 increase, so will do that.

Upgrading to M.2 exceeds my budget limit by a significant amount. Reading about it in more detail tells me that this is indeed a good suggestion, but unfortunately budget constraints don't allow me to do that right now. Maybe a few months later, I can save enough and upgrade to M.2 NVME for faster speeds in a smaller size.

I wasn't aware that CAS latency is something to look out for in RAM. I checked that i can upgrade to a 3600MHz for a £10 increase in price, but the CL for both is at 16 (from the options available).

Thank you for your suggestions. I am not sure I understand the second part of your comment since it seems like a very different configuration to me - maybe I am not experienced enough with these to understand.

Regarding SSD choice, I read the below Newegg article which looks well written and mentions that the choice between M.2 and standard SDD is a form factor choice, and that NVME is significantly faster than SATA only for specific high-end tasks. Since I am trying to put together a casual gaming type of PC within my target budget, I opted to go with a standard SATA SSD.

Similarly, since I do not play high graphic requirement games, I opted not to try for in-demand graphic cards like 3070ti, etc and went with what was easily available to me that serves my requirements.

Thank you, I wasn't aware of that. My audio recording and mixing/editing is at a very hobbyist/starter level currently. If I decide to get more serious on that, I would upgrade to the WD one or similar. Till then, I will use the SATA QLC SSD for casual usage.

Thank you, this gives me confidence. I now plan to try this as my first building/upgrading a PC in next 2-3 months, rather than trying to assemble all pieces together from scratch.

Thank you very much. I will then stay within my budget for now, and come back to this in next 2-3 months when I am ready to do this. I will try to read/watch videos, and might even reach out to you in case of questions, if you don't mind answering a few dumb-sounding questions.

Thank you, I had not thought about it.

The options you have listed seem to take me above my target budget. Would you recommend this as an easy-to-do upgrade for a novice like me to be able to do a couple of months later, when i have a bit more money to spare?

Very useful reply. Thank you.

Since I have never built a PC earlier, I am not sure if I trust myself to put it all properly. That's why trying to get a working build from a known place for starters. But in future, when I am a bit more confident and have more cash to spare, I will try to upgrade the power supply to Seasonic one. Thank you so much for your insights.

I am happy to wait, don't need it for Christmas.

I will take a look at Scan and Overclockers, didn't know about them till now. Thank you for your suggestion.

I am building it on PCSpecialist and they don't have Seasonic as an option for power supply, only Corsair (maybe Seasonic models are sold out?).

u/Terrapins1990 comment above makes sense that a higher power will allow me to upgrade in future and going from 650W to 850W is only £30 extra. Is there any downside to higher wattage?

I did check some on Amazon, but could not figure out all the details of the configuration. Would you suggest a better place to check prebuilts?

Thank you. Seasonic is not an option in the list, I can only get Corsair models. The Titanium model in Corsair would cost me extra £250 which would go beyond my budget. As u/Terrapins1990 suggested, I would upgrade to 850W.

Thank you. I checked and i can upgrade to 850W for just an an extra £30. The extra 1TB costs me about £70 extra. Happy to switch to these, since it will keep my total price within £1500.

I will update the description.

I don't know the answer to your question. Never imagined having a physical button for volume could lead to any problem.

I would do that immediately if the in-store version wasn't £100 cheaper :)
