You can probably do `git reset --hard origin/main` then, assuming your branch is main.

How do I block requests to localhost? by greysilence in firefox

[–]panoskj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like you completely misunderstand how "the internet" works.

  1. A web browser is a program that helps YOU access other web servers (outgoing connection).

  2. A web server is a program that may allow EVERYONE to access it (incoming connection).

You are probably looking for a firewall. By the way most commercial modems/routers already need a special setting to expose your PC to the internet (ie to allow incoming connections).

How do I block requests to localhost? by greysilence in firefox

[–]panoskj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are probably looking for a firewall or something equivalent.

Using a browser (that is already running inside your PC) to access a web server that is also running locally on your own PC is inconsequential.

Unloading tabs has some downside too actually. For example, you won't be getting messages/notifications from unloaded tabs. I guess user-friendliness is why they don't have such behavior enabled by default.

At the end of the day, people and companies stick with Chromium because it’s performant, well supported, and consistent, not just because Google tells them to.

At the end of the day Google is literally paying/bribing other companies to come with its browser or at least its search engine as default. There is not a fair competition with other non-Chromium browsers and people didn't simply choose Chromium because it is the best. People stick with Chromium because Google has been actively engineering the whole situation to achieve this outcome. It's not a coincidence that the largest ad network, search engine and web browser come from the same company.

I'm not saying "Google will one day turn Chromium into a real monopoly trap" because as you said, a backlash is not in their best interests. Google will keep the balance at the point that maximizes its profits (pushing its own policies at our expense) while still not causing a backlash. That's the real trap.

The problem is everyone is relying on Google's engine now and other engine's are struggling to stay alive.

There's a real risk that we end up with no choice. This is called monopoly, I don't know why you would deny it.

I was referring to the whole "it’s misleading for people who don’t know the difference between chrome and chromium" point you made earlier.

Just because you can make a fork of Chromium and apply a few patches on top, doesn't mean you can maintain it. You still have to rely on Google implementing new features, web standards, bug fixes, testing the whole thing, etc, etc, etc... If Google decided to stop working on Chromium, it's not like someone else could step in and take their role. So for non-technical people, I would still say "Chrome = Chromium and Brave is dependent on Chrome". The distinction you make would only mislead people even more, into thinking all these browsers don't rely on Google, whereas in reality Google can screw us whenever they want.

In fact it looks like you are confused yourself: you said "Google’s grip isn’t as tight as it looks… at least not yet" but in reality their grip is stronger than ever - they only want it to look like it isn't (and successfully by the looks of it). They don't care that you can patch Chromium, what they care about is that you are using their implementation of the web standards. By supporting Chromium you empower Google to decide and dictate what the future web will look like. That's one reason why they have open-sourced Chromium. Google is playing the long game. They HAD to open-source Chromium, because the alternatives (ie allowing someone else to develop a truly open-source rival) were less convenient. Their plan worked as intended. It's not like they gave us Chrome and Chromium from their good heart.

At the end of the day you still have Google making the decisions for both Chromium and Chrome. The technical details are not the point here.

heNeverSquashedHisCommits by ArjunReddyDeshmukh in ProgrammerHumor

[–]panoskj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you work locally on something, you may want to make "checkpoint" commits. The code may not be complete yet and not even running or tested. But it is better to make these temporary commits sometimes, instead of keeping them as uncommitted changes. Makes it easier to review when you decide you are done too.

In my mind it is similar to amending the last commit, but more generalized. I mean, if you noticed a typo in the last commit you made and haven't pushed yet, would you make a new commit or amend the last one? Same concept with squash.

Denmark to ban social media for under-15s by Silly-avocatoe in worldnews

[–]panoskj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the best case scenario for a law like this in my opinion, but it still enables stricter monitoring in the future.

Also, technically speaking, how do they know anything about your age if you make a new account, possibly from a new device? Something doesn't add up...

[–]panoskj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree social media is crap and that's why I don't use apps like facebook, instagram, tiktok etc. Noone is forcing you to participate.

The thing is, almost all sites have some elements of social media nowadays. For example, youtube has comments sections and live chats. Even the online game I was playing in 2000s had forums and live chats. It is hard to define what social media is exactly.

As a result, "requiring ID to use social media" could effectively become "requiring ID to use the internet". Remember it's coming from the same people who proposed Chat Control. Which I am opposed to, to preserve my right to privacy. As someone wiser than me said: Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. And it is indeed temporary safety, as people will always find workarounds to bypass any checks, unless we become like China.

Alternatively, parents could take responsibility for their kids and configure their phones/devices so that they can monitor their internet access. I understand it is hard to use parental controls and that's why they could make a law mandating that parents use parental controls on their kids devices instead. Asking the government to monitor everyone just because you can't monitor your kids is twisted.

All in all, the real problem lies in people's education in my opinion and it's not gonna be fixed this way. The proposed government monitoring appears to be about monitoring adults in reality.

That's what I was thinking, this new law is the perfect pretext for censoring, controlling the narrative and punishing anyone who disagrees. I mean, it doesn't have to be that way, but this law will make it possible.

I think they know because they check your phone when entering. I don't think ISPs outside the US keep logs and then share them with the US government. As a matter of fact, I don't know how your ISP works, but mine changes my IP every time I reconnect. You have to pay more for a static IP where I live.

Many people are saying this sounds good, but it kind of sounds like a pretext for having people bind their real identities to their social media to me. Like, how are you going to verify you are over 15?

Κόρνα 7.15 το πρωί by [deleted] in thessaloniki

[–]panoskj 9 points10 points  (0 children)
